So I work for an unnamed restaurant that has many remote carts and locations that all the employees are randomly assigned to. This one weekend I was assigned to work a music festival. This meant that I was sleeping in a tent and working a grill in 100+ degree weather. I’m tough like Superman so I could deal (plus, free concerts)
HOWEVER, my company was super short staffed because everyone was getting heatstroke and…unsober. Also, all of the event staff hired just for the festival only used it to get a free ticket and never showed up to work.
On the last day, after doing my scheduled 8 hour shift, I stayed an extra hour to help dismantle one of our two locations. I didn’t want to leave any of my coworkers or the managers hanging.
After we were done cleaning up the site I said “am I good to go” and my manager said “why don’t you go over to the last open location and help out.” So my dumb self (brainwashed by capitalism and being overly empathetic to the managers) went over to the other location. I asked how long they wanted me to stay and this man said “you need to stay until close”
?!
Excuse me I “NEED to?” Close was at 2am. I pull 10-16 hour shifts for them all the time but that’s different because I willingly add those shifts to my schedule. I can manage my energy and prepare myself accordingly. But I’m not going to let anyone tell me I “need” to stay until 2am after working a full 8hour day on the grill in 90+ weather after I had already stayed and extra hour as A FAVOR.
I said, “um no I won’t be here until 2am” and dipped ️
