Older employee was complaining about quite quitting I had an analogy for him.

He was complaining about quite quitting, and added that if someone was quite quitting they should just quit and let someone else have the job, not make the company for them. He expected me to agree, and was shocked when I said that I don't think people should quit if they aren't going to go above and beyond like he said they should. He started arguing with me and I stopped him and told him “You used to be a contractor right? And if someone hired and paid you only to build them a closed in porch, would you also install a brand new garage door for them without charging them extra for the garage door?” He then tried telling me that was different and I asked him how if we sign a contract for work and we do the job outlined we should be paid for it, and if…

But companies don't pay extra for above and beyond work most of the time. He came back with how do they expect to move up then? I said they likely don't, but that's OK because that's not part of their contract either, or when they decide they want to they can start learning more and let it be known that they want to move up.

He didn't have much left after that, he didn't agree but couldn't come up with any other whataboutisms.
