Pretty minor compared to some of the other stuff on this page but fuck it I'm hangry. Didn't eat before work, because we've been promised all week that we're getting dinner on Saturday because we're so overworked, then 10 minutes before break time I find out that's not happening now I'm typing this counting down the seconds to midnight when I can head home and get some McDonald's or something on my way
I'm not sure why May Day didn't work so well, but it got me thinking. Mid to late summer would be a good time for a planned country-wide strike. Kids are out of school and can come with the parents to a march if needed. Some schools/libraries/churches offer kids free lunches during the summer if that's an issue for some parents if they're not working. A summertime strike also gives people time to possibly grow a food if they're worried about not having enough food to get by. Some veggies grow really fast, and I bet you know a gardener who's always drowning in tomatoes or zucchini you could ask for some. Related to that, some areas have gardening groups or community gardens if you don't have space to grow, as well as “seed libraries” to get you started for free. The weather is nicer which means more time to…
Pay raise request
I work for the blue and gold auto parts DC, sounding very similar to Napa Valley. Yesterday I talked to HR about a pay raise because $16.71 isn’t cutting it. She asked what I wanted and I said $21 MINIMUM. She was shocked and said they can’t do that. I said what? We made approximately $9M each month for the past 5 months (including May) how do we not have money to get everyone a decent pay raise? She said she didn’t know and “they” keep talking about bonuses and it never comes. She went on to say they. Refer delivery drivers and the pay is $12.41. I said that had to be a joke and I could not believe this at all.
“This isn’t fucking Urinetown”
First time posting, but y'all have inspired me so much from reading this sub. I'm lucky to have a pretty supportive workplace, but I've definitely got some stories. I work as a floor lead at a small retail operation. As far as I'm concerned, my job is 100% to support my fellow staff in whatever way I can. This has allowed me to build an amazing rapport with pretty much everyone. Ealier this week our Receptionist asked if I could cover for her for a few minutes so she could use the bathroom, and that she said she had been trying to hold it in but couldn't. At first, I was really confused because I try to make it clear to all the staff that I will cover them for 5 minutes literally whenever they need it, no sweat. After she came back (I was like “I'm confused but you…
That’s 8am to 4am with two tiny breaks. All to push a project out with two other coworkers. 5 coworkers in our department have quit in the past two months so there has been so much pressure on everyone to be overworked. I understand why people are anti work. I have never been in a job that required that much stress unknowingly from back when I interviewed. Guess it’s time to look elsewhere or within to find a different venture.
Cut to the compensation chase
Now I appreciate that not everyone will be in my position / experience to cut to the chase when “recruiters” or companies call about openings. Instead of all the BS about this role is very exciting, this company is “growing” Politely wait for them to finish and state – I’m only interested if the minimum basic compensation/ salary is x Often the response is no, sorry we can’t offer that. Call ends. Saves everyones time.
