I've worked at a company for about 2 years now, software development and really tried proving myself. I'm not a 10x developer by any means but still produce more and better than the vast majority of my peers. I had taken on my own project, made it and done other achievements I thought my employer would notice but when annual review came around they proposed an increase which barely held up to inflation. It felt like a bitchslap. I managed to get a slight raise through a follow up meeting, but still less than half of what I wanted. They argued I had good pay for my age, and seemed to take that more into account than my actual accomplishments and that I perform top 20% of the company. It was the exact same thing the year prior. In addition to that I feel like I'm bashing my head against…
I'm in the bathroom trying to calm down. I found out yesterday I make less per hour than my coworkers who work the same position and have been here longer than me, and coworkers who are new hires. I make almost a dollar less. I brought it up to my supervisors and I was told it's based on work experience in the past, and seniority with the company, which they agreed with until I told them I know a new hire being paid the same wage with less experience. I was told the budget would be looked at and that I had a ten cent raise which means this raise to the same pay everyone else is getting would be 2 raises in such a short amount of time. I'm also the only trans person at this job and the only one being paid less than 12.07 an hour. I…
This is may be a better question for r/legaladvice, but I figure that starting here may be a good starting point. Most of the events that I want to expose the company for happened 10+ years ago, and I don't technically have receipts for them. They happened what I was very young, and I didn't think to keep most of the documentation. So I don't think I can realistically report it to the labor board. I can't post on indeed and glass door about it, because the list makes the post too long or it flags language violations (some of the abuse was sexual in nature, and involves a manager who still works for the company). It kills me that this company is constantly hiring young people under this manager who also could become victims, so I want to do what I can to expose it. I plan on publishing…
Hey, friends – I'm thinking of writing a book about the fact that capitalism is the enemy of the truth, and I'm hoping you'll help. To start with, I want to try to categorize all the different types of lies that flourish in a capitalist system (and, if possible, to find documented examples). Here's what I've got so far: False advertising Illegal false advertising of products/services “Puffery” and other bullshit advertising techniques that are legal but still lying Ghost-writing (i.e., lying about who wrote something) Dishonest job listings Misclassifying employees to avoid paying minimum wages, etc. False job listings to lure in and enslave workers False wage/benefit listings (e.g. remote work) Industrial misinformation campaigns (think cigarettes, lead paint, NFL concussions, global warming, etc.) Disinformation-for-hire and “reputation management” Blatant gaslighting (“Today's fantasy football experience is brought to you ad-free after a message from our sponsors”) Propaganda & selective reporting in…
Friend fired for seemingly no reason
Just note that this isn't one of those “I have this friend…” and it turns out to be me. My friend isn't on reddit and I'm trying to help her out. Short version of the story: My friend walks into work one day and is immediately told to go home because “it's not working out.” She immediately files for unemployment and is denied due to breaking a reasonable rule. No other explanation is given. She's currently filing an appeal and swears up and down that IF she broke a rule, nobody informed her. She is also sending out a letter today to request a copy of her personal file. Is there anything else she can do in the time being or just sit and wait for the appeal process? I'm inclined to believe her because she's a very straight forward person and the industry she worked for (in home care)…
Pay disclosure gets pushback in NYC By Cate Chapman, Editor at LinkedIn News Updated 1 hour ago New York City’s biggest companies are pushing back against a salary-transparency law set to take effect in May. Citing labor shortages and diversity goals, companies such as JPMorgan Chase and IBM argued in a letter to City Council that posting competitive salaries higher than what current employees receive could create conflict. The law requires minimum and maximum salaries to be advertised for positions — remote or in-person, salaried or hourly — to be performed in the city, in a bid to reduce gender and racial pay gaps. The companies, members of the Partnership for New York City, have requested the following changes to the law: The effective date be pushed to November Companies with fewer than 15 employees be exempted General postings for “Help Wanted” be exempted
I work in a state in which marijuana is medically (only) legal and I work in one of the grow warehouses in trim. Today we have a strain that has traces of mold; you crack open a dense nug and it might have fuzzy bits, or a bunch of spores will puff out. I was informed of this as I was beginning my batch and kind of freaked out. My coworkers and lead said they've been doing this forever and any complaints are ignored. I went to my manager and HR and I feel like I was given the runaround… they do test the batches twice but even trace amounts are allowed. “it's not black mold.” “Cheese has mold” and like other dumb shit just to get me to shut up. I have a small background in the medical field but also a quick Google search tells you that mold…
Scrum/agile is radicalizing me
I considered myself a leftist for a long time but I gotta say, nothing has radicalized me faster than my first tech job. I should preface this with the fact that my background is in science, and I’ve been unemployed since graduating from grad school. I’m unfortunately taking a job offer at a large financial institution so I don’t starve and become homeless. I hate that I have to take this job but as of right now, I have no other way to live. Anyways. Its been a several months long process to even get hired as an intern. I applied back in November of 2021, did months of workshopping and projects, and I’m doing pre intern training the whole month of April. In May I start an internship that goes on for several weeks and leads to a full time job given I don’t mess literally everything up (we’ll…
Bereavement Leave Denied
My friend’s father passed away in another country. Work denied her bereavement leave since she wasn’t able to attend the funeral as he died and was buried within three days, they would only approve the leave if she was going to attend the service, and she also had to show proof (death certificate or obituary). I’m in disbelief.
