About 30 minutes later I get a call from my boss informing me that the owner of the restaurant will be requiring a drug test in order for me to claim workers comp, knowing damn well the entire staff smokes weed in their free time and that I would inevitably fail. And I was thinking about it, and I feel like that's pretty fucked up. Like imagine if bosses could have a get out of jail free card for ever having to pay for work accidents for people who drink alcohol outside of work– because it's practically the same, if not worse. I don't do that shit before work. On the clock. None of that. I very obviously was sober when I cut myself while working, but none of that matters. It's just a loophole that some rich franchise owners are exploiting, and there's nothing I can do about it.…
Quick Google search came up with the actual labor law regarding the discussion with a coworker about how much you make. Next time one of you has a boss that posts some dumb sign about how you’re going to get fired or reprimanded, print this out and hang it up over the sign. https://www.nlrb.gov/about-nlrb/rights-we-protect/your-rights/your-rights-to-discuss-wages
I have several chronic conditions that I need to see doctors for, and my husband was going to get tested for a rare genetic condition next month (it is known as “congenital OCD” colloquially). We thought it was going to be $300/mo, and then we find it will in fact be over $600/mo. We can barely afford $300, but at $600 we will simply have to go without. Fuck that company and fuck America for not providing for its people. We should not have to go through this, and neither should anyone else. We also can’t get ACA insurance, so that’s not a solution. The only solution we have is to get better jobs.
