Well I’ve officially decided I’m out.. screw working for crappy employers.

I started a job 3 months ago that I haven’t liked at all. They promised me the Earth like remote working, which never transpired. I’m needing to do expensive daily commute. My boss just…sucks. He’s passive aggressive, micromanaging and non empathetic. The job is ridiculously convoluted and boring and needlessly complicated. I had to beg to be allowed to go for a simple blood test. I wasn’t allowed to go to appointments for my youngest child who is disabled even after giving 2 weeks notice. But the woman I work under can disappear several times a week, no questions asked. My uncle died suddenly and they begrudgingly gave me the day off for the funeral but insisted I fly back for work the next day so had to come back in the small hours. Two weeks ago my father had a heart attack and fell down the stairs. He caught…

Pizza party for mandatory “anonymous” employee surveys

I work for a rather large organization who does an annual survey on employee engagement to gather feedback about supervisors, management, the organization and policies. The survey is allegedly anonymous, yet somehow they (HR and leadership) seem to know who has and hasn’t completed the survey. The whole thing is absurd and nothing ever comes from the results. At best managers spend significant time trying to identify who writes what comments and then blaming that individual for their negativity. At worse teams are labeled complainers who need a culture change. Today, our state level leadership told us in a meeting told us that they would really appreciate us completing the survey. As a “incentive,” leadership told us that if 100% of employees filled out the survey, they would throw each one of our offices a pizza party and we would all login to a conference call and talk about how…

my boss fired me on my last day to hurt me but only ended up hurting the guests I was in charge of instead.

I work at an LGBTQ+ homeles shelter. My backround is as a teacher with a sociology degree. I took this job out of necessity but ended up loving all the people there. For months I built a rapport with my guests and we bonded with me being almost a mother to them. Unfortunately as much as we love each other, I always had problems with my boss. He is tone deaf and self absorbed and drove the first 6 original staff members to quit because of his attitide. I was the only one left. I went above and beyond for my guests and they knew it and reciprocated in kind. I finally had enough of Ty, my boss because he finally recognized me by offering me what I thought was a raise and a promotion. I found out later that the “raise” was just to even out my pay with…

My mom won’t stop talking about greedy millennials valuing money over job satisfaction and I don’t know how to refute it any more

In her words, she finds it odd that “the current generation” switched jobs so often – not because of her still believing in company loyalty or whatever but rather because she thinks people should put into consideration how much they enjoy what they’re doing over how much they’re getting paid. I don’t know how to explain more plainly that people wouldn’t feel the need to switch jobs if they were happy where they were and that money plays a crucial role in that, nor can I find a way to explain that in our global economy “focusing on the price tag” is just a facet of living normally?? That making a living wage tends to be the prerequisite to job satisfaction??? That people working several jobs and failing to make ends meet don’t have the privilege of deciding whether or not Amazon makes their insides glow???????? Additional information: she grew…

Do not go to Osaka Sushi.

Specifically North York, Ontario location. I am so disgusted by what I heard. My partner and I went for dinner and when the bill came, there was a surprise 13% service charge. I asked the waiter if it was a gratuity tip. He said no. He said the owners take all their tips. I asked him how much he makes working there and he said $15.00 an hour. Under minimum wage in Ontario plus the owners take the tips? I asked where the service charge goes and he said the owner. He said the owner complained about the amount of tips they STEAL from the servers so they tacked on this charge. I feel disgusted that I paid money to these owners that think they can get away with this. I really hope the employees there can find something better. I am pleading with anyone in the area to never…

There is no reason for us to be in an office anymore

Unless you need to physically be present for some reason, an office is an outdated concept. We can do the same work at home

Adding to the teaching shortage

I work at a small private school. Great kids, great colleagues. I loved it. I loved it until I had to attend a mandatory meeting for all faculty in which our head of school cheerily announced that in the interest of equity, teacher’s salaries would, at minimum, be raised to match that of the entry level teacher at a public school (for those who don’t know private school teachers generally make significantly less than in public school). They boasted this meant most of us would see a 10-18% increase in pay. I was thrilled! I live pretty much paycheck to paycheck right now. This money would not only alleviate so much stress in my life, it would allow me to begin getting my graduate degree in education. I was shocked when I received my contract for the following year with only a 3% living increase. As it turns out, the…
