Draconian work metrics and standards.
I work customer service for Verizon. Verizon's had a history of being unable to keep people because they grind them to dust very quickly. I know, story of American workforce. But with Verizon, they digitally track every second, I mean every second of your day and make you answer for it. And it seems like there's no thought behind it either. To give you the picture I take almost double the calls as everyone else per day, I never have to transfer to other departments and I don't need a supervisors help, ever. I don't put customers on hold and j get the job done. I show up on time and don't leave early. But what Verizon simply CANNOT abide is my “conformance”. That's time you're supposed to be on the phones vs time you aren't. The company is currently on the brink of the collapse because I take a…
There has to be more than this
I'm a 25 year old graduate student that recently graduated with my masters degree in social work. I'm extremely fortunate that I have lots of options ahead of me that could take my life in vastly different directions, but the thought of finding a job simply to work the rest of my life has been weighing me down heavily lately. Despite me having healthy hobbies that I enjoy, the mere thought that this is what my life will become is bothersome and rather depressing. There has to be more to life than working full time, paying off debt, and getting intoxicated on the weekends in order to destress. Does anyone have any advice? Thank you in advance for letting me vent.
I Love the Turnaround with Labor
My daughter is graduating HS and will be a lifeguard. She said that there's a shortage and she'll get 40 hours a week as a shallow-water guard. I remember being 18 and trying to get a summer job, but my parents were going on vacation soon. I'd walk in, let them know I had a vacation scheduled, and people would be so pissed I'd even walk in to ask for a job at all. There's a clear shift in power, and it's nice to see. I think our kids might have it a bit easier when they're 25 than I did.
I was just reminded of this. I’m 23 now, but was 16 at the time. I worked at the Brown Derby and was a back of the house employee. One time I was scheduled a double (11-13 hours) on a day I needed to call off. I don’t remember why but I asked my coworker (also a minor, usually worked as a hostess, but was trained in my area) to cover me and she agreed. Later in the day the front manger called me into the office and chastised me because minors can’t work doubles. I just stared at her speechless for a minute and then yelled “I am a minor!” She stared back at me speechless and was like oh I didn’t know that, that’s not good he (my manager) shouldn’t be doing that. Of course nothing changed. This is why teenagers need to be taught their rights and…
Girlfriend wants to quit her job
Need some advice on this. I’m currently going to school to become a welder and she’s a sales rep for an insurance company. Currently she’s is our only source of household income since I’m going to school. She absolutely loathes her job and says she refuses to go back but we have two young children to take care of. What should I do or tell her?
Will the hell ever end?
I'm so sick of being micro managed and expected to work overtime because they are short staffed. I already work side gigs, they knew that when I started. Hire more people, pay a decent wage but, don't force those who come in everyday, work hard, never call out to pick up extra shifts. We all have lives. If it weren't for health care I'd be gone. Just needed to rant. Thanks for listening.
