Forcing $8/hr employees to buy a gift for top management

I’m curious to know what everyone thinks about this gifting practice at a popular beauty chain that most of you routinely shop at. Hell, I’ll name names. Ulta. New hires are often paid pennies above minimum wage at $8 per hour and receive no benefits. Despite the poor pay, management requires each employee to donate $5 for the general managers birthday and Christmas. $5 can be the difference between eating dinner and going without for some people. Management pesters and intimidates many employees who’re very young and lack the experience to properly stand up for themselves. This practice causes significant stress for many workers but everyone just does it without question for fear of being “that” employee who rocks the boat. Am I wrong in thinking that this is highly unethical and inappropriate? Should we be required to gift up the pyramid? I’ve seen managers buying their manager a gift…

Fuck self checkouts

Had to brave Walmart for the first time in quite a while to buy some ink for my printer today. I know. Realized they have nothing but self checkouts. Walk up next to one where a guy is taking items out of his cart and putting them in bags without scanning. Look at his screen and it says “Start Scanning Items”. Watch him finish up his full cart and walk right out. I'll be honest, for a short second I thought of grabbing someone. I looked around at every register being a self checkout and thought how many lost jobs these have caused and we are now doing their work while paying them for the pleasure of shopping there. Watched him walkout and get to his car. I applaud you random Chad. Fuck Walmart and fuck self checkouts.

boss told me I’d get a pay increase, I did but it is wasn’t what he promised.

Up until recently I was on minimum wage but my boss messaged me and told me he'd put me up to £11 an hour. I checked on my most recent pay check and he's only increased my pay to 9.50, not what was promised. What do you guys think Is the best course of action to get my originally promised pay?

A very long story of my work life.

Context I work at a small IT company in Eastern Europe for a relatively good salary, but still undercompensated if we take big IT corps in the sector into consideration. Boss (CEO) uses every cliché such as “We are a family.” and “Team building activities!” and can be quite cringe. Boss directly controls every branch at the company. We are about 13 people separated into 4 branches. My position I am doing around 3-4 people's job and I feel indispensable, so much so that if I go on vacation, the branch I “lead” pretty much stops working due to how a project's life cycle is setup. Due to my “position”, I have a pretty good levarage in salary negotiations and in other benefits. So far, I have negotiated a company car for 100% personal use (I use it as if it was my own but the company pays for the…

Thinking Faster at Work

During meetings or group projects, I always have a few problems. 1.) I am stuck listening to things I already know. 99% of the communication is things I am very well aware of. I hear it slowly explained and I tend to space out. I know what's coming and where its going, and this becomes very boring. 2.) When a point is mentioned one time- I got it! Then I hear it reminded over the same meeting, explained in details, then reminders sent by email and then again over days, reminded, reminded and reminded again. When I explain my plan, I am reminded again, even though my plan takes it into account and I knew it a long time ago. 3.) I can see the problems, know the solutions and can almost instantly visualize an effective plan for anything. Explaining that requires many steps, which generate questions, which lead to…

Should we give “spending money” to children/teens as a social expense?

I've been doing a lot of thinking about how to best handle wages and hires. I know it won't go anywhere, but I find these exercises useful for my own fulfillment. I've been asking myself if teens should have different pay rates to make up for the less experienced labour they get. It belittles those with many years in the labour force to pay them the same but it abuses the hiring process and the kids to pay them less. I've fallen on the answer that the government should be giving all school enrolled kids a form of UBI. While also raising the minimum working age to 18+ while in school. Special cases of course like living alone or something would be an exception. This would include a drastic raise to minimum wage as giving kids “summer spending money” wouldn't be a factor anymore. Thoughts on this?

Should I quit my new job?

Hi, sorry, I've already posted this in a different sub, just wanted to get more answers around this. I recently got a new job and worked 2 shifts. The job came to be more than I expected. Its a bartender job in a hotel, however, being paid the minimum wage for 18-21-year-olds, around £6.70 which the job requires me to open the bar by counting the cash floats, doing the main job of just working the bar (which I primarily thought I was doing), as well as taking food orders, and serving them to customers and cashing up at the end of the night. In all my previous, higher earning jobs (£9.10+ in 2018) I wasn't responsible for opening the tills, closing them, cashing up and counting all the money and transactions to put in a safe. Is this a reasonable reason why I should quit? Or am I being…

Work Messed Up the Schedule and Now it is My Fault

So for some more information I am (M19) and I am a full time college student. I also work part time at my campus gym as a facilities attendant for minimum wage ($13 an hour in my state). My job has this system where our schedules are posted. In the system we can also add, drop and trade shifts. Well for weeks our schedules have been up there and they had me working an opening shift this Sunday which is Easter so the gym was gonna be closed. With all this in mind I figured it was safe to go home which is two hours away to see my family for Easter weekend. Let me REMIND you that this schedule has been up for over a month. Well today my supervisor emails me stating that they messed up the schedule and now I’m working an opening Saturday. He didn’t just…
