Claws is an Anti-work Allegory
Hear me out. Claws is basically about a group of women who work hard, hustle and do everything possible for what Desna calls “The American Dream”. No matter how much work this group of women does, they are continually thwarted by an unfair and corrupt system or people. In the end ,the only way the group found any quality of life was by escaping the United States and moving to Cuba . At the very Desna notes that they are happy in Cuba because they can finally enjoy life and have free health care.
I have worked with animals since I was 16(currently 25). I’ve done a little of everything. Start out at a local animal hospital working in kennel, left that because truth be told it HORRIBLY depressing. Had a few serving jobs until i stumble upon dog rehabilitation and swim therapy. I LOVED that job! It was extremely rewarding to help dog(the occasional cat) learn to walk again or gain strength back. However the company I was working for was not willing give me any raises and capped me out at $14/h. I the. Started dog grooming and I love this job as well but lately I’ve been my body has been aching more than normal and if I have one more matted “doodle” on my table, i may just fall apart. So i have recently begun to wonder what else is there for me to do? I don’t have a degree…
It almost feels bad to say it, but I think that's the Stockholm Syndrome talking. I currently work for an engineering firm that has lost most of their employees over the last 6 months. My last day is, well, soon. I don't want to be specific in any way if I can help it. (TOMORROW BITCHESSSSSSSSSS… technically today but I don't give a fuck). Anyway, this is all a culmination of years of overworking employees while providing us with inadequate tools to do the job. Somethings wrong? Maybe we'll get on that in a year or two. Oh, Covid happened? here is a shitty work from home system that is super laggy and barely allows you to get the work done. Wow, you still managed to be really productive with this stupid laggy system and keep the company afloat? Your reward is nothing. Yup, nothing. Now there are whispers of…
I’m about ready to look for another job.
I’m a shift manager at a McDonald’s. I’ve been with the company for 13 years but was promoted two and a half years ago. There have been ups and downs for sure, but I’ve mostly enjoyed being at that particular store. But then, last week, I was informed that I was being transferred to another location. It bothered me that it was done in such short notice and that I didn’t have a choice in the matter. I was told this store is suffering from a shortage of both managers and crew people. I decided to just grin and bear it, and hope that it’s temporary. After two days, I don’t think it’s going to be temporary and I don’t think it’s going to work out. In the past two days, I’ve worked an 8 hour and a 7 hour shift, with no break to even rest my feet for…
There’s too much financial pressure and uncertainty.
what to do to help workers
how do we help raise wages while not hurting workers? i read about living wages and i am afraid that if the federal minimum wage increases workers hours will be cut and there will be more unemployment. i thought about boycotting shopping at stores but i dont think me doing that will make a difference. i feel so bad about how low retail workers are paid and the vast income inequality between store workers and corporate but i dont know what to do to help. how do we get their wages to rise without harming them? how can someone who is not working advocate and be in solidarity with workers interests?
Such an amount of ignorance and crookedness from workplace..it's the worst when the supervisors act like we are invicible or that workers don't exist and then somehow they will blame us when we comeback nd say that it was me that made the problem by taking leave..they are not even available at anytime and they want support from us all the time..such a single direction bridge exist between workers and supervisors.. What to do next?
