I am 53, GenX, and just want to say how wonderful and heartwarming it is to see people younger than me articulating all the internal thoughts I've had about work BS. I was sold a bill of goods by Boomers as well. I'm a cautionary tale. Crapitalism sucks.
Recently had some mental health related issues resurface after many years of being pretty stable. Unfortunately this has affected my ability to work consistently and my direct boss has been riding me pretty hard over it, but I know my rights and have been standing my ground. Queue a visit from one of the companies senior management today, which basically resulted in them saying they're bored of hearing about my problems and I should “consider options outside” of said company . . . I was almost left speechless. Edit: Thank you all for the pointers already. I should of mentioned I'm in the UK 🇬🇧 though.
As the title says, A cafe who had all their employees call off or quit two days in a row and decided to not close the business. They forced the single employee who didn’t quit to run it by herself She was yelled at berated and humiliated by people who expected a smooth running business and their product There were customers who felt bad trying to explain to anyone who walked in that there was at least an hour wait. She would have to lock the door at times to prevent any one else from coming in to place an order so she can finish the current orders. This girl was still committed to working because I believe she needed to get paid, I just find it ridiculous a business could allow this. I believe this violates some type of labor law And I am not sure who to report…
Job trying to claim I’m resigning
This is confusing, but here’s the story. I work for a large bank in the United States, as a call center rep. Company in Delaware. At the start of the pandemic we all started working remotely. In that time, I had to move out of state, and I now live two hours away from my office. Sure enough, they want everyone back in the office now. I’ve explained to them that this kind of commute is not feasible for me, and have asked if there’s anything they’re willing to do to work with me, but nope, they expect me back in and if I’m saying I can’t make the commute anymore then they consider that my resignation. I have gone out of my way to explain that I have no wish to resign, but that is irrelevant to them. I now have today to make a decision and tell them…

my dying father’s advice to my son
I have a sneaking suspicion these are gonna be delayed until after the midterms whilst using vague phrases as “We have plans, we're still discussing it” then will start collecting shortly after and all talks about “plans” will fade away. Meanwhile, wages and work conditions will still be on the back burner. The college age vote will hinge on this and they know it. I feel so bad for you younger folks.
I’ve been looking for a new job while still in my current position. It really is a full time job looking for another job — I had to take time off to apply to new positions and literally spent 6 hours two days in a row applying to 10 positions. Lots of applications with long, open-ended questions; revamping resume and cover letters. And then all that (sometimes spending upwards of two hours to apply for one job) only to get responses like the one I got today: “Unfortunately, we have decided not to proceed with your application for this role. We received over 600 strong applications for this role…”
