I'm a member of a fairly large local union, and it's that time again: contract negotiations. Wish us luck everybody – voting is in less than a week. For those who want a union job for all the benefits, remember: the fight doesn't end with forming. You have to fight EVERY contract to keep those things you enjoy, because the company sure as heck isn't going to just give it to you. For any interested in what it's like, feel free to ask. I'll try to answer what I can đ
Was told my generation isnât loyal
I was speaking to a training manager the other day since itâs a very quiet period at work and was looking for something to do. Training manager essentially told me âI was warned about you in my MBA. Your generation will only stay with the company until it doesnât benefit you anymore.â But said it in a way of âwhy should I give you any more training if you wonât stay aroundâ kind of context. Clearly these people have a severe misconception of what working a job is.
OK do your second best
Know your rights
Iâve been considering leaving my well paying job after 3 years. My last year I took to building my network and have a decent number of work emails I can reach out to for potential work. I was fired on the spot and didnât even have to put in my two weeks. Wonât my next companies see I was fired and after calling HR might reconsider me? How can I make sure my referrals outweigh HRâs word? Why is it almost better to be fired than quit on your own volition?

Hi, this is my first self applied part time job. I only once worked as a holiday job for a family member. Iâm a student trying to save money for a trip in a few months. During the interview (my now boss?) kept on emphasising the importance of being able to take others shifts if someone canât come that day. I understand that but, she said she expected people to give up their plans for the work. Then she went over sickness days, giving an example of a former worker coming to work with a broken leg then given a chair to sit at the counter. I will be going over my contract with a friend on Monday but for now this is what I know.
