Recently, the recommendation letter that my previous boss wrote for me a year ago was shared with me. I just read it and I can't believe what he wrote: “Sometimes, however, he might be a bit more stubborn and reluctant to take (sorry for the expression) bullshit.” The rest of the letter is great, thank you I guess. I got the job, and I am really happy with my current situation. But this was something really unexpected (and the ones who read the letter in my current company are still laughting about it). Why in the hell someone would phrase that in this way? Do you also had the chance to read recommendation letters, and if so, what is the most hilarious thing you read?
I just want to rant about having to spend my own money on work clothes and then be told it’s not smart enough.
“Deadlines” are an abusive tactic
I work in IT and I absolutely HATE when the leads or clients ask me to estimate how long it will take me to finish a project. The fact is, unforeseen obstacles always come up and anyone in my line of work knows that guarantees can't be made. So basically, I feel like when they do this, it's to get you to make a commitment so that if it takes longer than expected they can come back and vent their frustrations on you when they don't get what they want when they want it. I think that from now on whenever I'm asked that question I'm just going to tell them that it'll get done when it gets done.
Job offer rescinded
I got a job offer for a job that’s across the country, and was planning to move. They gave me a start date at the end of May. They called a few days after to ask if I was able to start next week instead. I said that I would be able to start next week, no problem, but this would require me moving some of my own plans around, would like to take a week off towards the end of May, as I had existing travel plans. They called back saying that requesting time off so early on in your employment shows a lack of commitment to the company and that they’re rescinding the job offer altogether. WTF?
Just got asked by my manager if I’ll be taking my laptop with me when I go out of town tomorrow to which I gave a flat “no”. Why am I going out of town? To spend time with my family. My cousin died 3 days ago. And yea they know. But what that tells me is this lady, if she were in my shoes, would take her laptop with her and be surrounded by her grieving family…working. I’m not surprised though. This same manager got butthurt when I said I’m not putting my work email on my phone and declined to get a company phone. She was perplexed when I didn’t show up to the after-work company happy hour because I was with my actual friends. Like do people like this lady not realize work is literally just her life? Or do they know and have just accepted defeat?…
More and more workers are being forced onto the picket lines to defend their standard of living. Join us for the opening launch event of “Picket Lines Mean Do Not Cross!”, a nationwide campaign started by labour militant activists across the country. This is an in-person event that will also be livestreamed, with a panel of various labour activists, on Saturday April 23rd at 5 PM EST. https://www.facebook.com/events/914237735907767 With inflation soaring and the banks preparing to increase interest rates, the bosses are already enforcing wage cuts by capping raises at just one percent or less. Workers must stand in solidarity and stop scabs from crossing picket lines so workers can win the gains they need to provide for themselves and their families! https://preview.redd.it/aoz1ncj8kdt81.jpg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fae05724c927d50f453e39977184cd707d15cb75
