Work for this mid level type company where there is a lot of busy work that could easily be handled over the course of a day rather than a week and my job is to make sure certain numbers add up, excel is my best friend. I recently decided that I was going to take a vacation for a week and didn’t know where to go, was talking to my coworkers about it and my boss overheard. A while later she comes to me and asked where I was going, as if it’s any of her business, and was deciding between a beach or some type of fun activity at Orlando. She had the audacity to say “since your indecisive do you really ‘need’ to go on a vacation, there is a lot of work here for you to do and not slack around”. For the first time in my…
So, historically, general strikes are not a new thing- the practice stems from jurisdictional strikes, or secondary strikes occurring at other workplaces in support of an ongoing strike elsewhere. Increasingly as we see more strike efforts in the news, we may wonder why strikes only tackle one issue at a time- one union, one strike. Why not work together, strike together? We are all in the same boat, after all. I've recently learned that this is because a historical precedent (in the USA) exists to limit any so-called general strike. A law was passed in 1947 called the Taft-Hartley Act, enacted by a republican-controlled congress in spite of a presidential veto by Harry Truman. (He tried to repeal this law later as well, but was unsuccessful.) This act was passed following another law which was passed a decade earlier in 1935, the Wagner Act, that legalized union activity in…
Hello everyone! I haven't used reddit in quite a while but my fiance said that you guys might be able to help me with a few issues I'm having with a former employer. Okay, so I only worked for this nonprofit theater for just under 2 months, I was considered a contractor. I quit/was fired(long weird story) about 2 weeks ago and still have not gotten paid for the portion of the last month I worked. Here's where things get tricky, the person who offered me the job is my fiance's sister (B). I don't want to go into all the drama that happened while I was working there but I don't want to burn a bridge with her, at least not irreparably. She's a total bitch, but she at least feels like a real sister and I want her in my life, at least in that capacity. Now this…
So I work for a marketing agency and I’m trying to push for a raise and promotion for one of my direct reports. I brought this to the director of my department and they were all for the promotion and when I started asking about what the raise would be…they launched into a whole speech about how promotions are not always tied to raises and that employees shouldn’t just expect that. Whenever I’ve gotten a promotion in the past, it’s always been tied to a raise. Without a raise, they’re just throwing more work at you without compensation. Overall this just feels very scammy and abusive…
I am so unbelievably tired of this.
For some background, I graduated from college with a degree in graphic design last fall, and I did an internship for a few months after that which was required for my graduation. I graduated college with honours having an 87% average and was told that my portfolio looked great by plenty of people. My work was always praised by my teachers and I tried my best and applied myself. I was fully remote during my internship and got a letter of recommendation which was also highly praising. When I finished my internship I thought “Well, how hard can it be to get a job now?” Jesus christ, I had no idea of the depression that awaited me. I have applied to over 600 jobs after that. They were almost all entry level. I have managed to get 5 interviews in a period of over 6 months. I was ghosted after…
I had orientation for a brand new job yesterday. The orientation was 2 hours away and my company required me to bring photo ID, my original college degree, social security card and vaccine proof. When I left, the HR representative and I both realized she still had all these documents. I was already on the turnpike. She said she would FedEx the documents to my home Express delivery but that I was cleared for work. Problem is, she clicked the checkbox on the FedEx delivery that says “signature required and photo ID age 21 or older.”. I don't have a photo ID. It's in the package. I was supposed to start work today. Now the company is angry because I called off since I have no photo ID since I have to sit home to sign for the package that is coming to my house to get my photo ID…
