Our job is to taste free air

“Our job is to taste free air. Your so-called boss may own the clock that taunts you from the wall, but, my friends, the hour is yours.” – from Severance, the new show on Apple TV+, A show as effective an indictment of a toxic workplace culture as I have seen in popular media.

Some thoughts and my situation.

I am 18 years old, I work at a Circle K location, one of 4 in my town, and it's the only place that i could get to hire me. I have been here for nearly 6 months and the state of things is just pathetic. I had to negotiate my way to $10/h post employment (which cant even reasonably afford me a studio appartment here), and the store itself is a wreck with filth and pests. Scheduling is erratic and my coworkers and I are often called in to cover shifts even at other stores, of which 2 had managers quit recently. Most of my coworkers are quitting or transferring because of a transphobic coworker that our manager refuses to do anything about, and another coworker my age is forced to do roughly half of my manager's job for her. Regional management is more concerned about how many cookies…

Anyone know of a good employment/ contract lawyer in Denver?

I was recently recruited from a decent job with a really cool company. Had been at this spot for 2 years, great boss, solid benefits, cool company. This new company actively sought me out, brought me on as their head of sales effectively tripling my income. We sign a six month contract with discussion of equity upon renewal of the contract. Fast forward three weeks, they don't get a loan they applied for and decide to eliminate my position. So I left my comfy job, worked for them for three weeks and they decide to kick me to the curb on a whim. They now also haven't paid my final paycheck. As far as I can tell, I have wrongful termination, breach of contract and wage theft suits against this company. So yeah, this post is part “fuck predatory companies who think they can fuck up your life with zero…

Why did Covid spur the Great Resignation?

Why are so many people finding new/better opportunities, or just up and quitting their jobs now? Why was this an outcome of the pandemic? I know the reasons the mainstream media will cite. But I want to know the truth lol, so I'm asking here. Why are people really changing and quitting jobs so much right now?

Got fired from my job after coming back from an scheduled absence and finding a replacement during this period

Basically what the title says. I have no way of a legal case because I didn't have a contract and worked as a “freelancer” (quite common in this country unfortunately). I had to take a month absence which was scheduled way ahead of time (4mo before) and my boss told me that if I could find a replacement I would be able to get my job once I came back. I persevered and was able to find someone that got hired with that previous knowledge. Now that I returned she's saying that things were quite busy, they had to hire more people… And they don't have enough shifts for me. It's just disappointed that I fell for the “we're like a family” trap, and actually tried to remain loyal to them back a couple of months ago (when the restaurant had to partially close due to a reform and I…

Encourage Unions/Workers Rights Through Online Reviews

I recommend everyone post simple messages encouraging unionization and working conditions on online reviews. This is especially important for large companies such as Amazon, Walmart, Starbucks, Target, etc. Use an account under a different name if you have to. Remember, while an individual post will do little, if you we collaborate, we are poised to make a change! Please upvote!, it is important that this reaches the most people as possible!

Let go when “it wasn’t busy anymore”?

I quit my job as a kitchen porter to start working a part-time weekend job at this furniture and home decoration store in the second half of October 2021. I loved the job and pulled my weight. As as soon as the 10th of January 2022 (aka when the Christmas Rush was over) they let me go, giving me the 2 weeks pay without having me work the 2 weeks. They didn't give me a reason why other than “its just to quiet to keep you around”. But its very obvious that they always planned on firing me as soon as Christmas was over. They never mentioned that they only needed me for the busy Christmas period and knew that I had quit a job to work there. Now I cant find any part time weekend work because no one is hiring. Is this a normal thing for employers to…

This is the first break I’ve taken in months

State law is that employees must have a mandatory 30 minute meal break per 5+ hour shift. I haven’t taken a break since probably November. My blood sugar is slowly getting back to normal since I’ve eaten (I have problems with regulating it). I feel so relieved. But now I’m just thinking about how many more shifts I’ll go through with no break. I’m a pushover so I let it happen to me. How do I stand up for myself more and ask managers to take breaks instead of waiting for them to come to me?
