Minimum pay = Minimum effort
I was doing some removals work emptying a house across the road from a restaurant I used to wash dishes and then cheffed at. Now the boss of the restaurant is chatting with a few waiters outside the restaurant. So I was loading some boxes into our van with 2 of the other guys from the removal company working up a sweat, and my old boss sees this and jokingly calls out to me “Hey Toby, I have never seen you working so hard, you are even starting to swea So I replied “Hey Robert, you never paid me more than minimum wage so it wasn't really worth sweating over” This got a chuckle out of everyone except my old boss. I then just shrugged and got back to work while my old boss just headed inside without saying anything. Not that I expected to make a huge amount of…
I worked in the kitchen and as a server for a small pizza place in interior British Columbia, owned by a couple who moved here several years ago. When I started and heard them using the classic line of “we're a family here”, I rolled my eyes at first. But as the months went on it really did seem that way. I loved all my coworkers, the owners were more or less great the whole time. There were moments here or there that they showed typical overbearing boss behaviour, but they always ended up talking to us later on and explaining themselves more calmly and rationally, apologizing for the ways they acted in the moment. It really did start to feel like a family. Hell, this was the first year I didn't go home for Christmas and I actually went over to my bosses place for dinner. Just me and…
The Impossible
I applied to a job (more like 15) and got a call back. I tell them I'm interested in the position I applied to; the ENTRY level APPRENTICE position. “Of course, now we are looking for someone with some experience, as we don't want to train from scratch.” How is this still a constant thing!? I have a degree. I have work experience in leadership roles outside of my degree. BUT YOU WANT AN APPRENTICE WITH EXPERIENCE SO YOU DONT HAVE TO TRAIN THEM!? The system is rigged and broken and I'm tired of this bullshit. I'm out, peace.
First and foremost, I want to clarify I'm only venting, not asking for money. I completely understand a post like this can seem really scammy, but I just have nowhere else I'm comfortable venting_ I'm working a full time job at well above federal minimum wage (I make $15/h at 40 hours/week). And I still don't have enough to cover everything. Out of sheer desperation, I made a GoFundMe and it's honestly humiliating. I feel like a loser and a leech. Like I should be doing better financially. I'm too ashamed to share it with family and friends, so frankly it's not going to make any money, either. I mostly just made it to ease my anxiety. It's not working, FYI. I just hate that in a country that claims to be a pinnacle of opportunities (U.S., as if anyone need help guessing the obvious answer), I can work 40…
I'm all for a tax on Billionaires, but lets be real here. Taxing billionaires and then spending all of that money on defense contracts is just going to move the money to the hands of billionaires invested in the weapons industry. The only reason our oligarchs are making a stink about this is that they want it to be perceived as a “left” move. If America had a REAL “Left”, they wouldn't turn around hand all the money right back to our oligarchs. This is not to help anyone other than Raytheon and Lockheed Martin shareholders and executives. The next presidency the taxes will be removed, but the spending increases will stay in place. Lets remember that privately owned corporations propped up and supported by the government against the needs of the worker was one of the defining characteristics of Fascism in Germany, Italy and Spain. A government that's allowing…
