This seems to be something that almost everyone as a worker knows, but ironically most managers don’t know; what is so hard about understanding that if you mistreat workers, they won’t do their job as intended?

If a manager over works an employee, they'll be too tired to give quality work, if they underpay an employee they won't put as much effort into their job, if they harass an employee they won't be willing to compromise for the manager, if they don't care about an employee they won't care about their job or the manager. Wouldn't all this be common sense? Obviously if someone is tired they'll be too tired to do their best, if they feel sick they can't work hard until they heal, list goes on. Is it really that hard to understand every action has a consequence? (Thx for reading, just had to let that out)

Is it legal to require overnight on call with a stipend?

My daughter has run into a situation at work that I find a little bit baffling. She works as a standard W-2 employee Monday through Friday, 8 hours a day. The company (in CA) also requires that she does occasional overnights on call in which she takes a work phone home. She missed a call at 1 AM because she was sleeping and did not hear the phone ring and they are setting up a meeting with an HR rep to take corrective action. On top of this she does not get paid for that time on call but gets $100 stipend each month for it. Something about this is not sitting right with me, I have no real insight.

I didn’t get a raise. And I’m not making a liable wage.

Edit: LIVEABLE wage. Today was really rough. I had a meeting with my boss and it really did not go well at all. Let me first say that I'm an interior house painter and we are usually working in the same town I live in. Around a 15-20 minute drive. Well this week my boss wanted me to go to this house that's an hour and a half away.. and we would be there for 2 weeks. I physically cannot afford the gas it takes to go there. I don't spend any money on anything except gas and bills, and our rent just increased by a whopping 300. As well as all of our other bills and goods bc of well inflation. So I got “let go” aka fired yesterday.

My boss called me into his office and sat me down, said that I had missed more work than everyone in his small family business combined which is an absolute lie and exaggeration. I missed 5 days from October to now plus I had a few days where I had doctor appointments to clear up what the pain in my stomach was. I came to work sick a couple of times and he sent me home saying I looked and sounded like crap. He let people come to work with Covid and I ended up catching that again in December. After Being Treated Poorly I Got a New 5 Year Deal!

I work at a prominent North American university and I hold a position outside of academia so my role is subject to a lot of criticism and turnover. For my first 6 years I've struggled with my position often facing budget cuts, restructuring, and have been criticized both personally (for my clothes and out of work interests) and for my professional decisions. I felt discouraged & hated in what was supposed to be my forever home. It really took it's toll both psychologically and emotionally. Mercy housing is a shit company

I left their company only 2 weeks ago after being theeatened by my “supervisor ” who came to the property while supposed to be on medical leave to physically threaten me. I was a maintenance technician for their property and lemme tell you. They let my supervisor sexual harras single mothers living there (low income units). Fired his previous tech when she complained about sexual harrasment and him sleeping on the job. NEVER even followed up with me or any of the 3 women who reported sexual harassment from him. I quit and was owed 25hrs of PTO. 24hrs of covid test pay. 200 (8 months worth) of stipends and more. Company wont pay their vendors or their employees and have no problem with allowing single women to be harrased.
