Sliced my fingers now I’m on thin ice?

I work in a machine shop, I’ve worked in many the last 7 years, and today I made a really stupid mistake and sliced 3 of my fingers DEEP with an exacto knife. Obviously I had to go to the er, and when I told my boss he- 1. Sighed like someone asked him to help them move or something. 2. Rolled his eyes and 3 talked about how his supervisors at corporate want him to downsize in my department, the department with 3 guys working including me. If I just injured my hand then I get fired I’m jumping off a bridge. If you wanna see the pic of my hand lmk in comments lol it’s not too bloody I washed before the pic

How to career pivot?

I graduated from college with a political science degree with a statistics minor, learning nothing except i do not want a career in politics. Joined Americorps right after college and became a full time caseworker after my service year at the same organization. I learned i do not have the ability to set work/life boundaries in that sort of role. I moved back in with my parents during covid and started working at a law firm as a paralegal. This just isn’t satisfying work and doesn’t feel like a long term career. I’m realizing i need a significant career pivot but I’m not sure how to jump into something new. I feel totally under qualified for every job i feel interested in. Anyone here make a significant change without spending a ton of money going back to school? I’ve been reading about data science bootcamps but I’m not sure it’s…

HR and Recruiters are Gatekeepers?

Someone told me that in the tech design people in HR or in technical recruitment jobs act as “gatekeepers”. This can be applied to any industry. How do you interpret these “gatekeepers” to the hiring process?

Toxic work environment

So for over 2 years now I have worked for this family owned business.. For much of the time I worked with these people, I've put up with “lighthearted” jokes about my race from my boss. I have made it clear I do not like it multiple times and for awhile it actually subsided. (Coworkers have also taken part in these “jokes” after seeing the boss do it.) My boss made an out of pocket statement today which I didn't appreciate. So I mentioned to him that I noticed he stopped making these jokes for a long time and I appreciated that. But having grown up in an area where I am absolutely in the minority, I have dealt with this since grades school. I mention that I felt like I deserved more respect because I show full respect to my boss but feel like I am constantly walked over.…

Streaming service wants staff to watch content during off hours.

I work customer support for a streaming service that stays alive by a few hit shows, and by misleading and confusing customers as much as possible. We're required to offer discounts for any customers that are trying to unsubscribe. Lately, instead of discounts, they want us to push content and shows as a way to keep customers. They're suggesting we become familiar with the content during our off hours. I should mention, this company owns five different streaming services, all offering different content for different demographics. I barely watch TV in my free time, and now they're pushing it as if it's something we should want to do. This isn't something I'm necessarily worried about. But I would like some help coming up with talking points so I can express why this shit is ridiculous during my next meeting.

A company I’m interviewing with is asking for FIVE references

What are the chances they even contact these people? Randomly messaging old coworkers on linked in for references is just so awkward.

Shamed me for talking about pay

When I was 19 I started my first “real” job. I’d been told that the pay for my position was based on how long the employee had been working there and how good they were at their job. Understandable, I wasn’t expecting to be paid the same as someone who’d been there for years and knew all the stuff I still had to learn. A few days in, I was helping one of my new coworkers clean instruments, just casually chatting, and I asked if I could ask her about her pay. I was curious about what I could expect to earn in the future, as I hadn’t been told the range. She was fine with it, told me how much she made, we moved on. The second I’m done cleaning instruments, our practice manager pulls me into the break room and gives me a packet about how sharing pay…

I’m scared of my boss

So, I admire my boss very much. They have an amazing work ethic, are very smart and are fantastic at what they do, which is no surprise since they have been doing it for 30+ years. The field I work in is very hard to get into with no experience, but I got an interview and was hired on the spot. Apparently there is high turnover for this position. Not always, but just for my boss specifically. Then, as time went on, I realized why… I started at $16/hr which was fine because I had no experience and I still live with my parents. As the months went on, I started getting berated more and more for mistakes, and some days I have so much anxiety I get chest pains. Sometimes they make me feel pretty awful about myself, but that might be partially my bad for taking things personally.…

I had to tell them what I thought of the ‘business’ and make them of aware of how much they affected me in terms of mental health.
