I was eating lunch at a hotdog stand and the mom next to me was telling her young daughter that someone at her job got fired for working a second job and could even potentially be arrested if he shared company info. She was like “that's a big no no having a second job you should be fully committed to your workplace” to her young daughter. Like way to engrain a slave mentality at a young age, and your employer does not own you in your free time. They are not paying you around the clock and that is the dumbest thing I ever heard saying that you can have someone arrested for working a second job….
The other day, I was called in for an interview by a very enthusiastic G.M. who also sent me a very enthusiastic email the day before that I hadn't read, yet. We agreed to meet and I got there 30 minutes early because I take mass transit and wanted to test the maximum amount of time it would take me to walk to the station, miss my bus, wait the extra 20 minutes for the next bus, and get dropped off in front of my new job. So I'm chatting with tge A.G.M. and a few otger employees to pass tge time when finally the A.G.M. asks if it's okay if he interviews me instead. This is at 20 minutes past my scheduled time. We talk for 30 minutes, hit it off quite well, and he starts asking me about availability, etc. 10 minutes later, an hour late, the G.M.…
I worked for a team that had 2 managers in my time there. They were polar opposites. For reference, the type of work we did was REALLY boring. Manager #1: • Positive, upbeat, fun to be around. She always encouraged us to loosen up and have fun at work • She always had a full plate but offered to help us out if we needed it. If we were swamped she allowed us to move deadlines around because quality was more important than rushing to hit a deadline • During Covid she'd schedule wellness check-in meetings with the team, as well as one-on-one, to see how we were doing and if there was anything she could do to help • We also worked harder than usual during Covid, and she frequently paid for gift cards or gifts out of her own pocket to thank us. It wasn't much, but it…
I brought up to my manager my concerns with inflation, and was worried if raised this year would reflect it. He had a meeting with the CFO asking about offering raises above 3%, and she said no. But it could be revisited if there are problems with retention. She makes millions a year, I make $65k. The company recently bragged in a newsletter about record profits. I’m the only person that received “exceeds expectations” on my review in the company (my boss took me out for drinks and divulged more information than he should have recently.) Will this company go under with me leaving? No, absolutely not. My direct team will hit a speed bump or two, but they will be fine. Will I enjoy going up to the CFO and telling her that she should revisit her policy of capping a raise at 3%? Absolutely.
So my mother got a new job and went to give her two week notice at the old job before starting her shift. The manager said “No need, you’re fired effective tomorrow, but go to your station for now, I need it covered for today.” So she said, “Sure” and then walked right out the front door lol.
30 seconds of overtime
So I work for a big box store a membership big box store. Last week we were told that we had to clock out right at the end of our shift no one was allowed overtime. This was all well and good.. until..we started getting write ups for being ( and yes I'm serious ) one second past clock out time. My coworker was given a counseling notice for being 30 seconds past clock out time. I'm not even sure what overtime that would even be on a check? Not to mention they give us 3 minutes grace period clocking in but not clockt out? I received my first write up today because I was late clocking out ( 90 seconds ) yesterday after a jar of jelly had spilled on the floor and I being maintenance needed to get that taken care of. Didn't matter though. I guess I…
