TL;DR: Was prepared to leave for a better position and had to self-isolate due to Covid. Boss called me a liar and I decided to ask for sick leave and never see them again. Just adding to the list of stories and examples of how shitty bosses screw themselves over once you have made the decision to leave for good and they don't realise when they've lost power. A couple of weeks ago I received an offer for my current position, higher pay, better conditions, optional 3 days work from home, lots of things to learn and develop skills. How could I resist? My job back then was underpaid, taking into account the amount of roles and positions I “had” to assume, overtime and overall we had an absolute asshat of a boss who treated everyone badly. It was Friday when I decided to leave, I informed that I would…
False job ads at New York Life
This happened a few years ago for me, but it happened to a friend of mine recently as well so it seems they're still doing it. I graduated from a business master's in 2013 and applied to a job ad for New York Life in their San Francisco office. The ad presented the job as a financial advisor role for small businesses: It was explicitly not a sales role, but more of a consultant position where you helped small businesses make the most out of the business loans they've taken out. More crucially, the ad said the job was open for visa sponsorship (I was on a student visa and would need an H1B to stay in the US). When I showed up for the in-person interview the manager quickly disabused me: She claimed that the advertised position was something I would work up to, but that I would start…
This is such a waste of my time and everyone else's. Most people don't even want to be here. Why is this a thing? It's so exhausting acting like this is actually enjoyable.
Who else is Jaded?
I'm 40. I've always rose to the near top of whatever industry I was in. I was a solid team player, super nice, company guy. I worked the overtime, decorated for holidays, I had spirit. I was the best in email, on the phone, and in person. I can learn computer programs easily, am very able bodied, and disciplined. After 26 years of boss after boss not giving a flying “F” about me no matter what sacrifices I've made, I don't know what could get me to work for someone again. I'm taking a break now to learn some other skills, and that's going well, but it's high time to start looking again and I just can't take the bs. I don't know how I'm going to react when another employer tells me that the position I'm there for doesn't exist anymore, but the one just below it does and…
I am taking a really hard stance on my defiance to return to a corporate office ever again. I have prepared a list of all the reasons why it sucks coupled with the reality that there is absolutely no benefit to the individual contributor. Feel free to use these to form a long-winded and articulate response if ever questioned by your employer on the topic. I have 14 reasons why so far, and I would follow these up by questioning what benefit it has for me, the employee. Not the “team” or the company, but me. They won't be able to sell me on one. I hate the office because I have to get up an hour earlier, often while it's dark out which disturbs my circadian rhythm and thus my energy levels. I feel like I have to shower in the morning when I prefer to shower at…
Hi how are you doing antiworkers? I love that this community has inspired others to ask for a higher wage and be paid their worth. I thought I’d do the same but my boss laughed at me. I was in a sales role at my company (enterprise SaaS software) but a project with a major client was failing and it was all hands on deck to try and save it. Initially I was helping to proof read and format training materials and release notes. Then I started testing. Then I was adding users… before I knew it I was integral to the project and essentially doing two jobs at once. I much preferred the project work to the sales work. I asked my boss to transfer departments. He thought about it for roughly 4 months (Nov-Feb) all while I was working overtime to do the duties of two jobs before…
