“Corporations exist to serve their shareholders”

While discussing what is to be done about the insane increase in the cost of things we need to live (mainly gas, rent & food) you may run into a bootlicker Capitalism supporter who defends the companies squeezing us with statements like this: …companies have obligations to shareholders, they can’t just pay people more across the board because it’s “the right thing to do” while deflating stock value and profit margins My response: – Who are today's shareholders? Mostly institutional holders such as banks and hedge funds. Then you have retirement funds, 401ks, Roth accounts and the like. After that you have a small percentage of shares held by individual “retail” investors. – That means the only people corporations exist to serve right now are people fortunate enough to have large retirement accounts, the largest banks in the world, and people who are wealthy enough to invest. is work really as terrible as you all say?

hi, sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this. i'm young/ a teenager and i just want to know if working a normal job is really as terrible as it seems to be from this sub. I'm from an upper working class to middle class family and plan to go to college and i make pretty good grades. will i be able to get a job that sustains me and doesn't constantly take away my humanity? school already exhausts me very badly and i just don't want to have to do this until I die. And never get to experience life

In the US my employer can legally make me work 16 hours for a split shift with 7 hours until my next shift and there’s nothing I can do about it.

So even in a state like Oregon, if your employer asks you to work a split shift and still come in for your shift the following day, you must comply or else you will be fired and have no legal authority to take action against your employer. Here is an example. Let's say I find a job that wants to pay me $17 an hour while most places are only paying $13 an hour in my area. Obviously I would take the job since I cannot live off of $13 an hour in Oregon. Theres a catch though; this job will not hire me unless I sign a form that allows them to MAKE me work split shifts (two shifts in one day which could equate to 16 hours total), while also only giving me around 7 hours to rest until my next shift. Now Oregon labor laws demand that…

Corporate highjacking of sustainability

This is just a personal complaint and very tired rant, on something that I think really should matter in the forward motion of the /r/antiwork community. Our current society is destroying our planet and our lives. The Sustainability buzzword package is now providing a way for companies to work extra hard on making them appear sustainable or environmentally friendly. Or market the right product, to appear as if they are promoting sustainability. Globally harmonized sustainability standards are coming to fruition, but even if they are made by experts with the best intentions, it’s the stakeholders who really define the value of these standards, and they are at the whim of whatever bullshit companies will dispense. Meanwhile, our generations have grown up at a time where the harm to our lives and planet is tangible, our anxiety and our problem solving abilities are attuned to this systemic situation. New corporate jobs…

My bus fare has gone up by 30p a journey. That works out to about £144 a year *extra*. You know what hasn’t gone up? My wage. No point here, I’m just furious and wanted a place to rant.
