Put my 2 weeks notice in saying I’d leave on the 10th, but they’ve found someone to replace me already! I most likely won’t have to train her since it’s a 2 person shift. Can I just not uphold my 2 weeks because she’s already hired? Her first day is scheduled to be the 11th and I already have another job offer. I have no other reason to stay. (This is an entry level job so I won’t have to worry about contracts)
I’m currently in a battle with HR over fair pay. It been going on for almost two years. Background, I work as a clerk and there is another clerk and we get paid differently.I’m salary non exempt and the other is hourly. The other clerk has now received 6 bonuses and a cost of living adjustment that I “wasn’t qualified for”. It has been pushed under the rug by my boss multiple times, so now I’m battling HR. Bring me to today and my manager comes in and asked me to do more? I’m just sitting here like, are you serious? If you need me to do more you need to pay me fairly. I’m just waiting on HR’s decision before I make a move to quit.
Yet another resignation story.
“As of 31st March 2022, 3pm I will cease turning up to work”. Boss went on holiday after signing off on my bereavement leave. No one showed up to cover me and I missed my aunt's funeral. Took Monday-Wednesday sick (UK). Showed up for shift 3pm today, boss (still on holiday) rescheduled me to work until 8am Saturday. That's 39hrs straight, with 2 sleeps in there. I'm a carer for adults with autism and challenging behaviour, I'll maybe get 6hrs sleep overnight, that's doable for 24hrs… but the people I care for won't be getting the best out of me and deserve better. She's got an email waiting… Still got 21 days annual leave, can I just go home now?
So, as yall are probably familiar with, late fall/early winter is a terrible time for restaurant business, at least in small towns where not a whole lot is happening in general. So in November, my hours were drastically cut. Then I got covid and had to quarantine, but was denied unemployment. Then my cat had to have all her teeth pulled, so $800 had to be coughed up. I'm now $6k in debt and unable to pay my basic living expenses because of all the bills I've racked up over the winter. I've basically been surviving off credit cards this whole time. Restaurants around here during the slow season act like it's completely normal for all their employees to live off $200 a week, and I felt like I didn't have the leverage to question it. Even though my hourly has gone up, I still bring home about the same…
I (28F) just started a temp position at our local city hall. The job is super chill and everyone likes me. I am temp now through a temp agency, but my coworkers are very keen on possibly asking the boss and HR if I can be hired full-time by the city so that I can stay and help them since they are very short-handed. It’s not as much money as I’d like to be making, but I am very content with that being the starting wage at least. I struggle with severe mental health issues (per my last post on this sub, I did a week long stint in a mental hospital around a month and a half ago), and this job actually seems like something I can do well without sacrificing the well-being of my mental health. My wife and I could also really use the money right now,…
Thoughts on Exit Interviews?
I've had a lot of people tell me NOT to do an exit interview because the information you provide is never acted upon. I'm told that the exit interview is for them to judge how likely you are to sue them. This company got rid of our accrued vacation, so there's no severance or money they can offer in exchange. In fact, there's really no reason to sign any of the exit paperwork at all. Thoughts on Exit Interviews?
Solidarity with ALL workers?
I made a comment earlier that outlined an issue I had with my employer and how I handled it. It struck a nerve with some people. The TLDR is I am a private person, when asked about my personal life I would politely decline or redirect the conversation elsewhere, my coworkers didn’t like that and decided to go to management. Management had a meeting with me where they told me to share intimate details of my life with my coworkers or I would be punished. So, I maliciously complied and when asked would make up stories to make them uncomfortable or my inherent introverted communication skills would make them uncomfortable. This continued for two months until the policy was ended. I got a lot of DM’s and comments suggesting my malicious compliance actions were anti-worker because they made the workplace uncomfortable for my peers. I believe that workers have a…
March 4 is Employee Appreciation Day
Here's what my company thinks is a great way to “celebrate” (they have a ridiculous point program in play): To celebrate Employee Appreciation Day we want to reward you for showing your peers appreciation. Any employee who sends a peer recognition in this Friday, March 4th, will be entered into a drawing for one of ten chances to win 5,000 Points. One entry per employee. By definition, “Employee Appreciation Day is an event, observed on the first Friday in March, meant for employers to give thanks or recognition to their employees.” Wow. THIS, from a company with thousands of employees globally. So to get a small fucking chance to earn 5,00 points, I, an employee, have to submit a blurb about another employee. Ummm…thanks?
WFH jobs I can do with limited training
So, I quit working in the hospitality trade last year (was a manager for many years) and currently I work in digital security (manufacturing) but the shift work does not agree with my messed up body clock at all. I do some freelance graphic design/illustration on the side but I don't have the experience to do that full time (that's the long term plan, but it's hard building a portfolio working shifts) I've no degrees or formal training but I'm a fast learner and have what can be described as a problem solving mind.
I work for (insert seasonal downtown Chicago company here) and they require their employees to wear jackets with their logo on it and these cost $150. What I’m wondering is: is it legal for a company to force its employees to either buy a jacket from One specific retailer that will put the logo on it or just freeze outside in their normal uniforms? (We also have to buy our normal uniforms) This company also is an “at will employment” company (employees can quit anytime without notice and the company can also terminate anyone for any reason with no notice) not sure if that makes any difference. Thanks so much for your help!
