Manager logging into my computer during off hours, impersonating me, and editing/deleting my work.

Since the start of my employment (about 3 months ago) there’s been some really weird behavior in terms of extreme micro-management by my direct manager. -My manager logs into my computer after hours and during my lunch breaks and sends emails from my work account to clients and partners. -He forwards work from my computer to himself and then presents this work as his own. -Deletes emails and documents off of my computer when he deems it unimportant or something that doesn’t pertain to me. There are a lot more things being done by my manager that are examples of crazy micromanaging but the above ones are the most concerning because I feel that this puts me in a compromised place where I could be blamed if something goes wrong because the “paper trail” will appear to come back to me. When I brought my concerns to him about this,…

Is it okay to leave your job without giving your two weeks

My girlfriends mental health has gone down because of her job and she would like to leave. They just gave her a horrible schedule and she’s more inclined to just leave than to give a two weeks notice. Are there any down side to giving no notice. She’s scared that it’ll go poorly for her down the road, like potential future employers won’t hire her. I told her it should be okay but just to not use any manager there as a reference and she should be okay. Is there actually any downside. (In Florida)

Corporate Simping

I have at least one co-worker who occasionally brags that she never calls off. She's also been the recipient of multiple Perfect Attendance awards. I can only eye-roll. This is the kind of corp simp/slave capitalism loves. She also gets excited when the upper management does their parade circlejerk to present awards and “photo ops”

Who does HR report to? It really does matter

If you'd like an imperfect, but fairly predictive, hint at how an organization treats its employees, take a look at its corporate structure. Specifically, look at who HR reports to. You can generally find this on corporate websites under “About” for most organizations with more than 50 employees. There are basically four generally accepted ways to structure HR in non-union organizations. Here they are with why the positioning matters: HR reports to CEO – This is ideal. This structure means the head of HR is on the senior management team and has a seat in the important meetings. It means the organization considers the input of HR in major decisions, which, admittedly, could be bad decisions, like to layoff. But it also means they part of any expansion or restructuring discussions and the HR needs are being taken into account from day one. It also means that other senior officers…

Why do bosses panic when you go direct to big bosses?

I work as an accountant. Which means sometimes I have to speak to senior people, to explain their budgets. Today, I get a panicking manager who needs something paid in a day or we won't be able to do a recruitment fair, with various bigwigs around. Small drama, but big drama to him. To pay things by credit card, it needs authorising by the Deputy Director of Finance, so I put in a request to have a quick chat. As I know she gets around 200 emails a day and would likely ignore my e-mail until it was too late. I speak to her, explain what's going on, apologise as it's low value, but ask her to okay it the next day when I get a request in to her. All fine. I forget about it. Around 2 hours after we have all knocked off, I get a call from…

“No one wants to work” “We are understaffed” Ok, hire me then?

I hope vent type posts like this are allowed here, I don't intend to be breaking any rules. I really need a job because I need to move out of my mom's house and I also have close friends who need out of their houses who I want to gather up and make my roomies. Thing is, obviously, this requires money. I'm 18, in high school, and don't have much experience. Worked four months at Walmart (fired) and more recently, 5 at Taco Bell (quit). I quit Taco Bell because honestly, felt like it was killing me. I didn't even work that much, 10-20 hours depending on the week, but it took its toll. I have friends I want to talk to and hobbies I want to engage in, so I often found myself running on minimal sleep for days at a time. 3-5 hours was common, 1 or 2…

Calling out pro-work media framing

I just came across this Business Insider thread on Twitter about how workers are starting to just (gasp) work less rather than quitting, which it coins as “coasting culture.” Something about it bothered me, and eventually I realized it's that corporate America is framed as the solution to a nascent antiwork sensibility — rather than its cause. It says: The challenge for corporate America is to find a way to embrace this new professional mindset — the desire to do good work without striving to be a superstar, to prioritize life ahead of work. And: Coasting culture might not end up replacing hustle culture. But perhaps the two can find a way to coexist, even after the red-hot job market begins to cool. So, the problem that workers have very rationally awoken to the inherent indignity and meaninglessness of waged work over the course of the pandemic is presented only…
