Sweep the floors for a while

I work at goodwill as a cashier. There was a really chatty older couple at my register today. Very friendly and joking throughout their transaction. I rang their total up and told them it would be $78 dollars. He playfully patted his pockets and said “Uh oh, I might have to sweep the floors for an hour or two!” His wife and I laughed. I then told him that it’d be more like the rest of the day, because they pay us $11 an hour. Their whole demeanor changed almost immediately. His wife said something along the lines of, “Oh honey, how do you make it?” I laughed it off and told her I was lucky that I had family to stay with. They proceeded to complain about the price they just paid for the clothes they just bought, which were donated freely to goodwill. (5.29 per shirt, 6.99 per…

the more exposure I get to the c-suite, the more I see it’s a joke

I am a data scientist at a large corporation. As of last year, I report directly into the C-suite. To say that I am horrified by the complete shitshow that is executive leadership is an understatement. Our Chief Data Officer literally doesn't know ANYTHING about the fundamentals of data science, data architecture, data engineering, etc. He got the role because he's really good at using corporate buzzwords like “synergistic insights” and “leveraging cross-functional collaboration.” It's widely known that he's grossly unqualified for his role, yet his base pay is more than the combined pay of everyone on my team. Another chief I work regularly with, has on more than one occasion literally said she thinks laws are annoying and that the company should just do whatever will make them the most money even if it risks legal trouble. You know, because who needs those pesky laws that are meant to…

My experience as a 16 year old worker in cherry processing

I worked in a cherry processing plant during the summer, and a few people wanted to know the “experience,” so I decided to write it down. The shift was 7am to 5pm got paid for 9 because of breaks, which were more like try not to pass out and drink water because if you did that while the line was on everybody suffered, ergo everybody got angry at you. You would start washing your hands with boiling water and soap, because you're handling food products, and then you would put on these cheap as fuck latex gloves that won't fit on your bare hands doesn't sound too bad right but your doing cardio from hell, by the second day my hands were bleeding all they had was a looted out first aid kit and you had to bandage every single one couldn't use your own though had to be these…

Manager Help

I've followed this sub for a while and have even posted here. I'm a manager and try my best not to be an asshole. Judging from the fact that my employees like me (we go out, talk about our personal lives, talk outside work etc), I'd say they like me. Now I have this one worker who keeps telling me last minute he can't work. He has another job. It's clear that the job I'm a manager at isn't his priority which is fine with me, but he keeps messaging me on Sundays his new availability. His availability is down to three days now and he only tells me this mere hours before the beginning of one of the most hectic work weeks. I'm struggling to honestly see a reason to keep him as an employee, but I want to make sure I'm not over reacting here.

What do you do when someone/supervisor says shady things to you at work?

I’m not scared of people, I’m scared of my reaction and I’ve always been told to ignore things since my childhood and that has taken a toll on me into adulthood, I’ve always been scared to say something back because if it causes conflict I might get fired. This goes for co-workers also.

Is there a way to effectively report a potentially unethical performance review/raise?

Some context- Our team is relatively small, 10-13 people and we work on the weekend so it's pretty disconnected from the main management of the company since we have very little time that overlaps with their Monday – Friday schedule which means that the shift manager and the team lead hold all the power essentially. The way the shift is structured. These are really the only two guys with power, everyone else is just an associate. Anything that reaches outside of our shift has filtered through them and it appears their goal is to do the least work they can get away with without getting in trouble from higher ups which is surprisingly easy if no one really checks on you and just takes your word. Back story- Last week the coworker this is about asked to speak to the shift manager about an issue she had with how the…

My Dream Job

is to be a teacher. I am a sophomore in college and I would love to pursue a career in early childhood education because I am genuinely passionate about the subject and interacting with kids brings me so much joy. It's not fair that if I decide to teach in the US I'll be resigning myself to a life of poverty. Went on a teaching subreddit and nothing pissed me off more than seeing teachers respond to the “how can I teach and not be poor??” question with variants of “marry rich.” Like, I shouldn't have to marry rich to be able to support myself! WTF! Anyway, not gonna be a teacher. It's this country's loss, really — I know for a fact I would be the best goshdarn teacher ever. But instead I'll be going into something more “practical.” smh
