I work for a small family-owned chain business, probably just a hair under 50 workers total. I manage one of their stores almost entirely (Sundays the store is closed, Monday I have someone else open the store), and have only one other coworker at my store as most employees are at our main location. Today my coworker had a funeral to attend and couldn’t work, we typically just go take breaks on our own when we are together whether it be to get food or go and smoke a cigarette, but it was just me today on the busiest day of the week working 8 AM to 6 PM. I hadn’t eaten anything since yesterday so I called my boss and said I was going to order and go pick up my lunch and the store would be shut down for 15 minutes or so. I was denied that. I’ve…
There’s so many reasons this shit pisses me the fuck off. This is gonna be long so I’m leaving a TLDR. So, I started working at a somewhat casual upscale restaurant. In all of their meeting and throughout the fucking ridiculously thick employee manual they stress how much they value their employees and that WE are actually their number 1 priority. Which is why we make $2.13/hr even when we’re not on the floor serving for at least 2 of the 5 hours we work, lmfao. They also are constantly rotating between managers so I interviewed and was hired by the new manager, even though the old one is still with us. Tomorrow is actually her last day. But anyways. I was told at my interview that the attire was black denim and a white collared shirt (he specifically said didn’t even have to be button-up) and maybe he misspoke…
20 years for $1 more
Did a phone interview this week for a nonprofit up here in the PNW. It was basically buying and serving reheatable food plus cleaning up the area. Listing said it was $1 over minimum wage here, interviewer informed me that they had limited funds but were working to raise new hires after they took care of their current hires. Oh and she knew they said weekdays only, but I'd be cool with a weekend each week coming in right? Oh and some housekeeping duties too. Friend works there informed me their housekeeper quite that weekend after an incident. This is her same position they didn't tell her they were hiring for, so I let her know. But what got my hell no? I asked what NY wage would be factoring in my experience in food service. Which lead to that whole limited funds spiel. So told her I wouldn't start…
Got this in a WhatsApp group, this is from a country that doesnt have social net. “When you've emergency fund worth two years of expenses, you'll be less afraid of your boss. You'll have sufficient time to look for another suitable job. This is the first milestone in the journey of financial independence.”
I work at a hotel bar in a large city. I worked a particularly slow day and during those shifts I like to talk to the guests. One of them was a 22 year old teacher who was traveling by herself and a guest of the hotel. I get cut early and I decide to go out for a couple drinks. At a bar nearby, I see the guest – she is very clearly drunk and proceeds to throw up all over the bar. Now this part of town is kinda known for sleazy guys and she’s by herself – so I take her back to the hotel and get her in her room safe before anyone can take advantage of her. I leave her my number to text me when she’s awake to make sure she’s okay and she thanks me the next morning and explains she was blackout…
Farming Applications?
So, I saw a “We're Hiring” poster at my local grocery store and it listed several positions. Manager said to apply online. I applied online and called to tell the manager I applied and asked about a certain position. Then he tells me that they are just taking applications right now and will contact people when positions open. So I asked if they were actively hiring and he repeated the same thing- We are taking applications right now … I asked him about the “We're Hiring ” poster. Again he just repeated that they were taking applications. Got no where with that. Just farming applications. Just wanted to rant a little.
I’ve been working at this startup for a year and a half. The team that started with roughly 15 – is now a team of 4 including the CEO/founder. He announced to the three of us that from now on we need to skip all the pleasantries – from now on there will be no positive feedback. You will only know if you’re doing a good job, by still having a job here. He said – you’ve all gone very quiet, how do you all feel about this? My other two colleagues said yes – sounds good. I said that I just would need to take some time to process it. He said, ‘good – we all need some time to think about it, because this change is happening’. I’m regretting I didn’t just say ‘sounds good’ but the way in which this was delivered left me feeling quite uncomfortable…
