Training wages, does any other country do this?

I live in New Zealand and during an apprenticeship they can pay a “training wage” which is 80% of MINIMUM wage. I did my electrical apprenticeship through a training company, where I paid $2,500 (my life savings at that point) to start the apprenticeship. I went to every employer within my region and got turned down so this was my last resort. I was then paid $13 p/h to crawl through ceilings, under houses, cut asbestos, and work with electricity every day. As part of our training we had to travel to another city, pay our way there and pay for our own accommodation for our block course. So I was paying rent at home, and paying to stay at a hostel, for 2 weeks every year. I ended up sleeping in my car and just paying for the carpark. Those 4 years were tough, I had no money for…

Would this be grounds for a lawsuit?

I know of a company that hires independent contractors to do virtual call center work. It’s primarily customer service inbound. They are only paying the contractors while on an inbound call, but there are multiple times a day where the soft phone disconnects and you have to make an outbound call to the customer you were disconnected from. These time on these calls can add up to multiple hours over the course of a few days. The thing is, to make an outbound call you have to put yourself in a certain status on the soft phone and while in that status, you aren’t being paid. That’s not the only time you are told to enter said status; if there are notes you still haven’t completed for the customer after they hang up, you go to that status and finish notating the account. Is this something a lawyer could pursue…

i hate not having secure funds for myself.

earlier tonight, i was coming home from work and realized my steps going up to my apartment were still covered in ice from yesterdays storm. i knew it was like that, but i wanted to get a picture of it because some of the ice is round on top all the way across the step and it’s tilted at an angle which means it’s almost impossible to get a step onto. it just felt kind of scary to me. so i took a few steps away to take a picture and immediately slipped on the ice in front of the stairs and fell down and hit my head. the town i’m in doesn’t have very many people i’m close to and i live by myself, so if something happened to me i didn’t know who i could call. luckily, the worst that happened (so far) is the back of my…

Simple new rule: Q: Should I give notice/how much? A: Your notice obligations should not be more generous than your employer’s notice AND severance payment obligations. See how easy it that makes it!

Time for court A**Holes

My company refuses to pay overtime no matter how justified it is. They’ve now threatened with retaliation stating that it’s on record that I’ve labeled unjustified overtime. Which is total bs simply because they want to keep it at 8 hours despite the fact that we have long commutes from work areas back to our hotel for operations and days that can go up to 10 hours. I sent my manager the law regarding paid travel time and she was not having it. I have screenshots, texts, voice recordings, and more justification that i worked overtime. They’ve manipulated and bullied me into changing my time sheets to reflect only eight hours. And now most recently threatened me by saying that my standing in the company has deteriorated. Well that’s retaliation against the FLSA. So time to bring it to them

Why are boomer parents like this?

I just called in for the night. I work the night shift and had a horrible time last night. We were terribly understaffed due to a snowstorm yet the workplace ran full blast anyway. I got yelled at on probably about eight separate occasions for basically not being in two places at once. I almost quit, just walked out, last night. So tonight I called in sick. Well, my father is all angry and disappointed. He wanted me to get the overtime I would be on for the night. Yet when he worked, he only went in about two or three days out of a five day workweek because he had FMLA for years on end due to my bipolar mother. And when he went in, he was drunk about 90% of the time, and was suspended for months on end on several occasions for fighting back against people messing…
