I worked for this place for 8 years and gave EVERYTHING for this company. I came in early, stayed late, I even missed my sons first play because they needed me to stay late. One week we had our interstate colleagues visit us. The company put us all up in this fancy hotel for a week so we could bond and talk about company growth. I got on really well with one guy, we hung out and had fun and shared most of our meals together. The conference ended and we all went back to normal. The next Monday at work we had our usual team meeting. 15 of us there. My manager started by saying “I’m sorry we have to start this meeting off with a negative but some of you were quite rude during the conference and made faces toward the CEO when he asked you about your…
Working during a war
No matter how shit your personal situation is right now, you gotta feel for the people in Ukraine that have to still go to work whilst their country is being invaded. Like holy shit. I cannot possibly imagine the stress right now, clocking-in when air raid sirens are blaring overhead and armed soldiers are inching their way towards you. My sympathy to those that are suffering in Ukraine right now, I wish I could do something.
Just saw this on /r/oddlyterrifiying and it's absolutely surreal how people are not panicking on the footage while the siren is going off. Imagine waking up hearing explosions nearby and getting a text from your boss telling you to come in earlier to cover for someone who got wounded by explosions/shots/etc This can't be real. Are we this conditioned and beaten by capitalism that we can't properly react to war in your own country? https://www.reddit.com/r/oddlyterrifying/comments/t02qib/kyiv_ukraine_roughly_10_minutes_ago_air_raid/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3
A day or two ago I was working nightshift housekeeping in the hospital like I normally do and I noticed 2 rooms were empty and looking dirty but they weren't on the board. Not on hold, not marked dirty in the system. Weird. I made a mental note to come back and look at them but other rooms came up keeping me busy. 5am rolls around and the split second its 5 they put up one of the rooms I'd noticed earlier. I get to it and it's completely untouched from earlier when I saw it. I check the whiteboard with pt information, lo and behold the last round done on this room was at 10:45am. Depending on when the patient was actually discharged after the last round this room has possibly been sitting dirty for 14 or more hours. I finish the room and my pager goes off again…
Soon enough, robot customers, too.
29 Years, Delivery Man true story.
Started in 1993. Boston Chicken testing home delivery. I was paid $5 per hour plus, 1 dollar a delivery, in 1993. Average tip was $3. Next? Pizza Hut. Amazing benefits until PepsiCo sold Pizza Hut to Tricon, then (current) YUM! Brands. My life was destroyed over and over again. car after Car, I could never make enough. I spent 2012 to 2019 homeless, working full-time , cashing in my car, for Existence, Day, to Day after Day . It never paid, I paid my Owner (massa) day after day, cashing in my car. my most valuable possession. Today. 2022, I have been renting a room with no kitchen, no laundry, no garbage disposal, shared bathroom, and no storage for $20/ per day. Every day, 365. Living in my car, was almost better. At least you get to be alone.
Should I unionize student workers?
I'm a student worker (no work-study authorization personally) at a private university. The past couple of weeks I've been more fed up by the fact I've never been given a raise yet seem to be expected to take on the duties of a “senior worker” in my office. I've also become aware of potential wage theft situations for other workers and there currently isn't a system in place for student workers to report anything. HR is only for faculty and staff and all student reporting avenues are for Title IX violations which I (thankfully) haven't experienced. All student workers also make minimum wage, no exceptions I'm aware of. My main concern is that I know organizing a union can take years and most students are only employees between 2-5 years. Am I better off just petitioning the university or should I try and raise interest in a union?
Shafted by my new boss
This happened just a few hours ago. I worked for my now ex employer once before but ended up leaving due to a better job offer (3 days off and about 15k more.) I made sure to leave on good terms because I had nothing against the guy he just could not offer me the same wage as a bigger company. A few weeks ago he rings me telling me he has expanded his business and needs a reliable manager to run his new location in 4 weeks time and he thought of me. Because I like the guy I tell him I will come across if he matches my pay which he agrees to do. I give my 2 weeks at my job and decide to take 2 weeks holiday because I have some money saved up and I want to spend more time with my kid. A couple…
