I’d really like to know in the year of 2022 why some employers have people send in resumes, only to have you fill out a paper application. This mainly applies to food places. For instance, I had a job interview today at a restaurant. Mind you I put in the application and resume at this restaurant 6 months to a year ago. Anyways, I get there, and the manager ask me to fill out a paper application so I did, then when he started interviewing me he would mention or ask things that were clearly on the resume I sent him. I just want to understand why some places mainly food places do this cause it makes no sense to me.
I used to work in childcare but found the management awful and felt as though they were sucking the life out of me for their own profit, disregarding what’s best for the children and the workers for what’s better for their bottom line. One of the final straws for me was when the bosses and owner booked themselves a trip to Italy while most of us couldn’t get our leave approved, even when notifying them 6 months in advance. I want to re enter the workforce again and on an “ethical jobs” website I came across a “profit for purpose” workplace. Can anyone tell me anything more about this? Is it any better or just a repackaged “for profit” company? I know they do more work in the wider community from their website. I’ve heard working for a “non for profit” can be soul sucking in different ways, is this…
So sick of being taken adventage of
So I am 25 and have been working crappy jobs since I was 14. I recently left callcenter hell and started working at a bowling alley. At first I was so excited and I like the work. But they refuse to give me a break during my shift. They put me on the schedule till 23:30 but they know it is always at least 00:30. They are supposed to give me a 30 minute break when I work more than 5,5 hours. So because they schedule me an hour less than I actually work they take my right for a break. I almost fainted today because I had low blood sugar. I told them my dog died yesterday and that I really need a 10 minute break in between and they still refused me. I want to cry. All this for 10 euros an hour
We're two years into this pandemic and it has been a struggle for us to do what we do with a lot of Covid circulating throughout our sites, most staff out on WFH, all meetings still online, and just basically trying to keep everything from imploding. Today we got an email asking about our progress with annual goals. To be clear, we are supposed to commit to three detailed SMART goals in addition to our regular jobs that we're struggling to keep up with. These goals are mandatory but do not impact our pay in any way since our positions are all funded through grants. I don't know why, but this just felt really tone deaf to me. I'm so over this. https://preview.redd.it/6joj913z5oj81.png?width=458&format=png&auto=webp&s=788510dfd671e7a19199bc794048c437432c856c
Should medical residents form an union?
This was a topic that was brought to my attention a month ago after talking to some of my fellow med students. For background, after medical school, newly graduated physicians in the US have to complete a residency program in the specialty that they chosen and get matched into. The length depends on the specialty( ex. Family medicine is 3 more years while neurosurgery is the longest at 7 years). If you want to specialize further, you can do a fellowship afterwards which is usually another 1-2 years. However, the point is that residency is notorious for being a stressful time. You will have to work 80+ hours a week caring for patients and doing other precedures and paperwork for minimum wage. You will often have to work nights and days for 24+ shifts and be on call even when you are home. This is a lot, and I can…
I was listening to The Dust Bowl Dance by Mumford and Sons, and it got me thinking about the Grapes of Wrath and the mining towns in America, and it occurred to me that while I know of a few of these things, I don’t know all of them, and more importantly I don’t know names, dates, locations, or how to cite them. Any historians/journalists here that can assist?
Can they do this to me?
Im autistic and wanted to use my ADA accomodations to switch the time of my shift. I start working at 11:00-7:30pm generally. I wanted an earlier time starting at 8 or 9 while still maintaining an 8hr shift. After bringing this up to my manager she told me that can happen but they will have a harder time scheduling me. Isnt that violating the accommodation?????? I thought that upon receiving accomodations work hours requested are protected. Im so confused. How do I respond to her?
So I've worked at an insurance company for about 3 years. My job is to call businesses we've insured and gather info that determines how we charge them i.e. I inquire about their security systems, electrical systems, customer volume, etc. One thing I have had to do is file the background checks on employees. Background checks don't just get stored by HR, they get sent to insurance companies too. I've always been morally objected to our company's policy of dropping coverage to businesses that employ felons. Now, our company has decided that they'll raise rates and drop some coverage to clients who don't do enough of a social media background check on employees. They are actively working to push employers into getting social media passwords of workers. They said Reddit and Facebook should take first priority. I wonder why. The insurance company deals with everything from banks, to restaurants, to…
I'm asking you all this because for the most part we're aware of how bad retail can be in the United States, and I wanted to know how varied the treatment is for you all on a daily basis? Especially in countries that utilize social programs, and governance that has contributed to a higher level of happiness for the citizens in their respective country. I'd appreciate of you can give good examples fo your experience to help give perspective to us Americans.
