Look… I've been working at my call center job for well over 5 years. And I do mean well over. I fucking hate it but I'm really good at it. It's boring. It's annoying. And it's making me miserable. Long time lurker and appreciator of this thread and all of the sentiments. I finally have my own story and I need some advice. I'm a sole social worker in a multi-disciplinary team of non-mental health professionals at a post secondary institution. I'm responsible for the mental health and wellbeing of approximately 1200 young adults. My caseload grows and grows with no limits on when I can say no, what my scope should be, and no one to consult with due to confidentiality. For years, I've been working on proposals for senior admin to hire an additional role. The risks of only one person are endless- burnout, vicarious trauma, liability, if I'm away, there's no backup plan… Etc. I'll say it again: “Sex Work is Work” is a terrible take that ignores the colonial and imperalist nature of the sex trade. Sex trade is at its core hierarchical, classist and racist, with an inescapable connection to trafficing: 90% of the women and children in the sex trade in the US is bipoc and poor, and most of them are in the trade out of economic desperation and/or being forced, not of choice. To quote the historian Gerda Lerner: “The exchange of women was the first form of trade, making them seen as less than human. This division is the beginning of women's subordination at the hands of men.” With colonization came seing women's bodies as an open resource.
