As a recent graduate & new employee of Rutgers… can someone ELI5 the concept of striking?

In case you haven’t heard, Rutgers faculty unions called a strike this week – the first strike in University history. I am a Rutgers employee in the URA-AFT Union, who has just posted they are considering voting to authorize a strike in solidarity (we also do not have contracts). The inner Poli Sci major in me is loving this whole stick-it-to-the-man-eat-the rich-pay-us-an-equitable-wage sentiment that strikes bring… but I am concerned about what this means for me as an employee. If my Union strikes, what does this mean? Do I automatically lose pay, whether I partake or not? If I choose to work, what happens? How long do / can strikes last? Should I be worried about my job security should I partake? Thanks y’all, this is my first “big girl job” fresh outta college & this is super wild to witness such intense history in the making.

If it weren’t a legal requirement to increase wages they would have decreased that too! Also the shift supervisor wage was increased by 60p last year, this year they reduced it to a 50p increase.

How to answer , why do you want to leave your current job?

I have a few interviews lined up this week.. And some of yiu that may know my posts, it's literally like hell and toxic over where I am at. I have applied to the same positions/level up For the ones that are same positions, would the appropriate answer be , “I am looking for a better workplace envioement since there has been a change in leadership at my workplace,/ better enviorment?” For job interview with a level up than my current role, can I mention workplace enviorment and looking for a new challenge? Wwyd?

Planning to quit this shit show..

To keep this short.. Worked 6 months in a cleanroom, asked to be transferred to the warehouse since they needed people there. I was interviewed and got the job. 13 months later, 7 people needed to be transferred from the warehouse (as covid was a big business for the company, but no longer). I was the first one, the other 6 never got transferred for whatever reason.. unfair. I let it be, never complained. I was transferred to export. Now 6 months later, all of a sudden, they “need” me in the cleanroom. It will “only be every now and again”. Yet I found out that there is a new opening in export, that of “cell-leader”. A job i have actually been doing for the last 6 months without the pay associated with it. What's worse: other people have been offered the job. Literally been offered the job.. thankfully they…

Never have loyalty. Ever.

My Aunt (56) said I (31F) should share this story with someone so meh, I'll share it here. Seems appropriate. For context, I work in service (CSR/AM type stuff) and have for 8+ years. This job was close to home and hybrid which was a plus for me because my old job was fully onsite and that did a number on my anxiety. I can only take so much office banter before I shut down and literally want to stab my eyes out. So, yay, hybrid! /s After no training despite being promised (was supposed to be 6 weeks, was dumped on the floor after 3 weeks with no knowledge of what I was supposed to be doing), I was tired of getting baked every day just to force myself to show up. I pull my managers into a meeting and bring up the fact that it's been about 2…

The insanity of the social services crisis in the USA

I was just offered a dream job. A dream that quickly turned into a nightmare when I did the math and found out it is offering me $20,000 less a year than I'd need to make ends meet! That is proof that this country under values social programs to such an insane degree that they can't afford to get eligible people who want to work with them! I have a Masters' in mental health counseling and want so badly to give to the community, but I literally can't afford it. I'd make almost double their offering doing instacart 40 hours a week. WTF is wrong with this world?!

How Landlords cause Poverty

In response to another post, I'm just going to give the post this, which is a somewhat long read, but a very worthwhile one: https://astralcodexten.substack.com/p/your-book-review-progress-and-poverty It's a book review of Progress and Poverty written by Henry George in 1879, it was a best seller in it's day and over 200,000 people went to Henry George's wake. The TDLR of it is that since the supply of land can't change, anytime demand goes up due to an increase in wages or population then rent will rise. Therefore, the proceeds of most material progress will be captured by landlords and the amount of wages a worker gets to keep after paying rent will be reduced to the bare minimum to keep them alive. As Henry George put it: Place one hundred people on an island from which there is no escape. Make one of them the absolute owner of the others —…
