I was interviewing at a hotel today. The HR person mentioned that the hotel has very high turnover. She mentioned someone quit after one day and countless other people that quit. Said the hotel has done Everything. Everything but raise wages. It amazes me how out of touch people in these positions are. Just like the government leaders, do everything but the obvious for the electorate. I wanted to say did you think about paying people more. I’m rooting for more. More and higher turnover until these business pay more. Pizza Parties and culture don’t pay them bills. Pay more and maybe workers will take you seriously.
Just wanted to vent really as I’ve never been so blown away in my entire life. Utterly gob smacked. Is it normal to be made redundant but then have one of your bosses tell you that you need to design a new process on how your role / job will work and continue to function WITHOUT you? I kinda assumed that when the bosses deemed my role redundant, it was because THEY had thought of a better way of doing it, but they want ME to think of that? Maybe this is normal? I felt really kicked in the teeth.
Maybe not a new idea here, but my kids’ school district is debating a “homework-free night” which got me thinking that (especially in the context of multiple studies showing homework does more harm than good) all homework really does is prepare kids to show up somewhere and sit at their desk for a “shift” and then take more work home with them?
my boss underpaid me – advice
I work at a cafe in Vermont. From January until last week, I was paid under minimum wage and received tips. About 1/3 of the total card tips are distributed to the bakers who don't serve customers, however, my boss won't tell me exactly how tips are distributed. This seems illegal for 2 reasons: 1. In VT, tip pooling is only legal if tipped employees receive over minimum wage 2. I think that in VT, tip pooling is only valid if the employer “notifies tipped employees of any required tip pool contribution amount” (INFORMATION ON TIPPED AND SERVICED EMPLOYEES, VT DoL). I'm not sure if I'm understanding the situation correctly, and I don't know what to do about it. Does anyone have any advice?
workplace revolts
So my company has burned through their senior workforce and has stated they are receiving record profits. Recently the discontent has spread to put global meeting Q/a are being censored, they don't tell us when people are quiting on mass and we find out by accident a few weeks or months later, and most recently our regional forums have been getting hijacked in the comments section of workplace concerns. I'm on my way out but not sure yet. Not really sure why I'm posting just interesting and thought it fit here.
My Worst Interview Process Ever
So, about a month ago, I applied on Indeed for a Sales/Repair position at a local vacuum store. The Indeed post said that the salary range for the job was $700-$800 a week. I went in for my first interview with the manager of one location, which I felt went well, and I was called back for a second interview with the manager of the other location, which I also felt went well. After the second interview, I was told they would be in touch. In the following weeks, I called back a couple of times to see if they had made a decision. Each time, they told me they were still deciding. After about a month and a half, I finally got a call back from the first manager. He told me that they had initially hired someone else for the position, but they didn't work out, and he…
I find it increasingly difficult to be a part of a ‘working’ world when it’s so far out of balance, it should be criminal. Also, is it just me? Or is anyone else tired of just accepting that ‘Labour’ is the end all be all to existence… Humans have become the product that is necessary to keep the system going No wonder so many feel so empty, and are looking for a change.
I am a steward, bargaining team member, and vice president of the Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU) Local #39. We have been in negotiations with our employer, CUNA Mutual Group, in Madison, WI, USA over a new Collective Bargaining Agreement for more than a year now. Negotiations have ground to a complete halt and OPEIU #39 has filed multiple Unfair Labor Practice charges in an effort to stop CMFG from breaking labor laws related to bargaining and to force them back to the table to bargain with us in good faith. Yesterday, CMFG made the stunningly unethical decision to put the Chief Steward on paid suspension pending an investigation into “disclosure of company information.” Please consider signing this petition to stand in support of my coworkers and me as we send the message that we will not be stymied in our pursuit of a fair contract by illegal…
