Our new PTO system went live and the training guide indicates a reason must be included with the request. Is the the norm across most companies? We never had to do this before and I find it a bit invasive.
Nightmare staff lift…
I work in a 5 star hotel and we have 1 nightmare staff lift that everyone has to share. Let me list the lifts “quirks” that nobody has bothered to fix and that we have to work around. – it looks like a death trap – level 3 button does not work – doors must be fully shut before pressing any button for lift to work – to go up to a certain level: press 4 and then quickly press the levels number you wish to go to (e.g. press 4 then 2 to go to level 2) – if you find you are outside the lift and you call it and it doesn't come. The lift is stuck on ground level and needs to be reset (this happens frequently). Walk down to ground level. Hold down stop button for 5 seconds to reset otherwise the lift will not move.…
No tips for 6 months. What do I do?
Working part time at a new pizza place in town for almost 9 months now. I know the owner is doing well because this is his third restaurant he has opened. However, he has not given me or my coworkers any of my tips since November, and when he did give them to me, he made us split them with the whole crew (even non customer-facing), including him. Which isn’t fair because I’m very kind to customers and making most of the tips in the first place. But besides, that was better than no tip at all.
My 9-5 is killing me, every day is the same. I hear everyone complain constantly that they are unhappy with the way the system is set up but we all just keep participating in it. How long can this continue? We’ve removed all the beauty and joy from the human experience and now all we do is work until we die so that we can afford basic necessities. Our only value in society comes from how productive we are. The American dream is dead and yet we’re all just expected to keep going at it?
The weirdness of gifting at work
The plebs at my job, (me, and all the others in my caste) all pressure one another to chip in money for expensive gifts for middle and upper management. I adamantly refuse and they passive aggressively punish me. Sorry not sorry I’m not buying some douche bag middle manager at a law firm a 1k bottle of bourbon. I haven’t had a vacation in……oh, ever while he pays dues all over for fancy golf courses. No way. What makes the people behave like this? They don’t get ahead doing it. They don’t get raises or good graces. They still see you as lower than them. They don’t reciprocate. He will still fire you. It’s crazy making. When the “collection girl” comes to my desk (three times now!!) I say “ sorry not in my budget” She says “oh, well Betty Sue put the whole thing on her card and we…
Just need to vent. My job offers 12 sick days a year. Apparently HR tends to scrutinize you more if you use a sick day at the beginning or end of a work week or if you use too many at once (I used three days in four months nonconsecutively). But we also don’t get a pay out, so to speak, if we don’t use all of our sick days. So, why exactly is it an issue for me to use my days when I want? Like I didn’t realize it was customary for me to manage my mental health needs according to what my company requires. If I want to take a fucking mental health day, why is that any of their business. A sick day is a goddamn sick day.
