Fair wages.
So this is a topic that has been bothering me lately. I hired on as the only shop welder. As there last one left due to same reasons with unfair pay. Some of our work is your typical fabrication and welding in shop but the other major part is welding on a specific piece of equipment and is mainly field work. Field employees are paid more due to being on the road. Which is understandable, but the part that isn’t to me is that they want us out there welding on million dollar equipment for the same pay as shop. I’m the only company certified welder and they have been hiring new welder for a lot more then me with less experience. Told them I wasn’t willing to travel anymore for 21hr while the other uncertified guys make 30+. So instead they hired more welders for more money but still…
What does forming a union do in any case? Do they just stand outside and protest thinking they’ll get a pay rise if they do? Not really sure what doing that does, and what exactly does a union do?
