Is there any legality behind a “reasonable request” from an employer and being threatened when you say no?

Hello. This question is focused mainly on a situation with my coworker vs myself. Although I was present for it, they got the brunt of it. I hope this isn’t confusing. We work at a well-known resort in a certain department. We’re understaffed, and our department only has four employees along with our manager. There were supposed to be four of us working today, but the closer called out, and our manager had the day requested off. We’re then told during our shift and that one of us has to stay to close. My coworker mixed up her shift times for today from tomorrow and stated she was scheduled to stay until close. Supervisor is telling other coworkers issues he has about me

For context: I just started this job a week ago. My supervisor brags that he’s ‘one of the boys’ and that’s his management style. He’s even admitted to stealing from the work liquor before to me (on my first day). I work with my spouse now and he told another one of my younger coworkers that the higher ups don’t like how touchy feely we are and that I don’t do what he tells me to do in the back kitchen. Mind you, I spend 99% of my time asking where he is as he’s my trainer (he’s an expert at disappearing) and no one knows most of the time. He doesn’t cook the food correctly (the line chef is constantly angry at him for the food being lukewarm and unservable) and he does things like drink and smoke on the job. Anyone Else Hate Applications that Lie to You?

I just had a company contact me saying they wanted me to do a test before they'd consider me. Okay, no problem. I start it, estimated time was 10 minutes, nothing too crazy, but the questions were pretty convoluted. A lot of prompts, followed various attributes that included money, influence, following rules, creativity and so forth. Basically, 20 questions where you needed to say you're not motivated by money, but rather helping others develop and grow (or I assume anyway). I finish that quiz in like 20 minutes and then I get a prompt because I said I had a certain skill, I needed to do another test to prove I actually have said skill, with that test taking approximately 20 minutes. I mean, this is an entry level, $40,000 a year job… 30+ minutes of testing to see if I am maybe worth talking to is incredibly unnecessary.

it was a trap

i just put in my two week's notice at work because i finally got what was happening. i started this retail job last year as a seasonal hire and worked mostly in the back, unloading shipments. hard work but not that bad. after christmas, i didn't want to leave and they decided to keep me on. i remember one of my first days on the floor, a particular manager really didn't seem to like me. i was cleaning in the bathroom once and overheard her on the mic system to another employee saying i was probably somewhere hiding from actual work. i was offended especially since i was working as i overheard this. every time i was in her department, i just got the impression she had some animosity towards me. it really bothered me since i was trying my best for her and couldn't think of any one incident…

Got fired today, management cited BS reasons

This is just to vent about my current situation! I’m not looking for advice or anything, I thankfully don’t depend on having a job since I still live with my parents, but I just need to get some things off my chest and hope folks here will understand. So today, I unexpectedly got fired from my job. No previous warning, no anything, they just called me for a meeting and fired me. I had been expecting it for a while. Basically, to give a brief rundown: I worked in the tourism industry selling services. I got the job in May and the first months were great, but apparently, we weren’t making enough money to satisfy the company, so starting from September, they refocused the whole thing from something that I actually enjoyed doing to just sell, sell and sell. Doctors Note for sick days

I was told “too many people called out” at my job so now if you call out, you need a doctors note. The doctor I see absolutely despises this because this policy just takes his time from others. I hate it because instead of resting, I have to drive 30 minutes away to see my doctor for a simple cold. On top of this, I am basically charged 50 bucks for the visit. It’s like getting charged for being sick just for a stupid note. I have a disability on top of this. So whenever I have narcolepsy attacks that leave me unable to drive, guess what? I have to go to the doctor. I miss maybe 1-3 days a month. So it’s like a 150 dollar sick bill. On top of my neurologist appointments which are more expensive (around 140 copay). My coworkers voluntarily work an extra unpaid hour every day, and somehow I’m the bad guy.

The very first time I met with my boss, he said the hours are 8-5, and anyone working outside of those hours is a failure on his part. My coworkers routinely show up at 7:30 and work past 5:00. Meanwhile, I get to my desk right as our 8:00 meeting starts and I’m saying my goodbyes at 5:00 on the dot. By any metric we have, I rank first or second each month. My coworkers consistently make comments about the hours I put in. First of all. If I’m performing better than them over less hours, I think we’re critiquing the wrong person. More importantly, these people are putting in about an hour of extra, unpaid work every day. That’s equal to 6.5 weeks of unpaid labor every year. 33 days of free labor! But I’m the asshole.

Why do employers not give raises?

They know that employees’ costs are up 20-30%. And that there’s still a labor shortage. And when you don’t give a raise, employees will either: 1. Quit or 2. Reduce their productivity to more than compensate for the reduced buying power (I.e. if buying power is down 20%, I’ll reduce my productivity by 50%. Gotta factor in the spite tax.) So in either scenario the employer loses way more money than if they’d just given a raise. Do they honestly think people are gonna just smile and take it? Funny to see
