My job as a ski instructor requires me to be on site, but will not pay me unless I am actively teaching a lesson

I live 4 hours and 250 miles round trip to the mountain (I know, not very profitable, that's okay. But losing money?). I am realizing that there are days where I show up but am not assigned to any lessons. On these days, I have to stay around for at least 3 hours completely unpaid. I can ski the mountain, but I get no pay or compensation for the gas or my time or anything. I just don't understand how I can be scheduled my months in advance, have to arrive on time to work, but might not make any money?? I'm… losing money doing this job. Even on days where I have a lesson, I only get paid for the time I'm actually teaching and not all the other time I'm required to be at the mountain. How is this legal? Can employers force you to come in before your shift to prep?

This is in California. My workplace uses a third party website to manage our hours. To clock in, we must first load up the site. Anyone who has ever used a computer knows that boot up isn’t instantaneous. It takes maybe a few minutes to get everything loaded so we can clock in. Recently, our new boss made it a rule that everyone must come in before the start of their shift to prepare everything so they can get started right on the dot. One of my coworkers expressed she has no intention of doing anything work related prior to the start of her shift and continued to start up her systems at the beginning of her scheduled start time rather than before it. Because of this she was given a final warning about following the new rule or be terminated. I am unfamiliar if this is a permissible policy…
