I made a new game where I can’t wait to be surprised at what stupidly, outrageous thing will happen next! I laugh until I feel good about things that outside of my control. What do you do to remain sane at work?
I’m not even too sure what to do here.
I have been nervous about layoffs at my company. In the past I have been laid off around Thanksgiving and Christmas when companies figure out what they want to do for the next fiscal year. It’s almost like a sword looming over my head that I feel is going to drop any time. Then, the day after Christmas a text message from my boss pops up on my phone and I thought, “oh great here it comes.“ But instead I was surprised.
Should employers cover shifts?
Over the last few weeks a TON of my coworkers have gotten sick. Or “called out sick”. I work in a restaurant that wants to maintain the claim that they are “open 365 days a year no matter what”. I feel like all of these call outs are definitely a sign that just isn't possible but my employer keeps trying. Over the last week I've been asked to cover 5 shifts – it won't put me into overtime, but is it really my job to cover? It feels like putting the responsibility on the employee, especially around the holidays, is really unethical. Should employers cover shifts? Also, is it wrong that I NEVER want to take those shifts and am now claiming to be “sick” too?
i want a work from home job
i work in childcare and while i love it and would have loved to have this be my career, my body can’t take being sick all the time because of these kids. i see people on this sub all the time talking about wfh jobs and i want to know how they got them. i’m pretty much willing to do anything as long is it’s wfh. i have a good set up already (macbook, mouse, desk, keyboard, monitor) so i feel like it wouldn’t be difficult to transition. any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated.
Many Americans 65 and older are financially secure enough to retire. They're leaving the workforce, and the 69-year couple cited in the article plan to spend more time camping and volunteering. Isn't that awful? The nerve of these people deciding not to work until they drop dead! They're increasing costs for employers! We can't have that. It will result in workers making more money as available labor becomes more scarce. More terrible news! Shouldn't we celebrate the fact that people in their 60s are retiring? Isn't that what's supposed to happen? https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/27/business/economy/labor-shortage-retirees-boomers.html
Every time I see a video of a customer belittling a worker, there’s often (not always) a counter between them. Visual cues matter, so maybe a better designed environment could restore just a little humanity and kindness. Apple stores get this right—staff float around and blend in as “one of us.” It’s easier to be a jerk when there’s a physical barricade separating us from them.
About 2 weeks ago I started a new position with a medium sized company as a treasury analyst. The pay and work/life balance are both pretty good but the company seems to be in shambles. My manager (who started 2 weeks before me) has been a terrible communicator and I’m still unsure of what I’m supposed to be doing on a daily basis. I’ve tried asking and scheduling time with her but she seems like she’s always to busy for me. I’ve tried giving her the benefit of the doubt but she’s not putting forth any effort in training me. So now I’m frustrated and back on LinkedIn applying for jobs again. Has anybody been in a similar position and how have you overcome this?
The “you'll make up to x amount” shit is so annoying especially when half if not most of the time you're not being offered or paid that amount. Just be direct with wtf you're actually paying and quit trying to lure people in with your ring around bs. If you're base paying at least $15, say that. If you're starting people off at a certain amount, say that. Quit telling people you're paying “up to x amount” when most people aren't getting that amount. Not to mention quit putting a predetermined cap on what people are worth. Shit just sounds demeaning and limiting. You gotta check off every trivial and arbitrary box just to be considereed getting paid what's being advertised. It's bs. And they really try to sit there acting like it's such a good job, it's such good pay, when most people won't even make it. Come on…
boss was actually really decent!
So i took vacation this week so I could have the week between the holidays off. Last Thursday I had minor surgery, outpatient, no issues. Thursday night I ended up in the er with kidney stones. To say I have been sick and miserable since is an understatement. Boss called this morning asking if I would be willing to come in for four hours, triple time. Normally i would consider it, but I explained what was going on. He was like no problem, feel better. About an hour later I got an instacart delivery with cranberry juice, 7-up, crackers, ice cream and a little teddy bear. There was also a card saying to feel better from my team. I've never had a Boss like this before.
