Happy Holidays Y’all
I've had to convince myself that if I stay at my job, the money will make it worth it. I can't imagine working this schedule forever though. It's a M-F gig, and I get up at 3 am and get off at 1 pm everyday. It's a difficult schedule for me and I'm exhausted this week already. Just needing to vent!
My employer is under the false impression that I am in the United States building a billing system on his behalf. That would be the job of a programmer. However I am not a programmer. My boss, who likes to think of himself as a lead software engineer, isn't a lead software engineer, at least that's not how I see him. I am a pioneer in an exciting emerging occupational field. I am a digital performer specializing in remote work reenactment. And Gerald, the tired overworked middle aged man who believes himself to be a decision maker, isn't deciding anything. I am. The man who believes himself to be a Lead Software Engineer, I see him as much more than that. He is my patron. He has the honor and privilege of being graced by my art. I am the Michealangelo of Digital Performance Reenactment and Gerald is my audience…
I'm quitting soon and my cousin told me 2 workers quit at her job so I called the manager to see about working there. Here's the conversation: Me: “Hello, I heard 2 people quit and want to fill in one of those job openings.” Manager: “Just cuz I'm missing 2 people doesn't mean I'm hiring. I'll look at your application in a few days or so.” Me: “Ok thank you” Basically, the manager will give two of her remaining workers the workloads of 2 people until another payday passes then she'll hire me. During this time, the overworked employees will not be paid as much as 2 people while doing the work of 2 people.
Money Concern instead of Humans.
I work in a warehouse freezer. Today our main heater for the warehouse went out. So now it's colder on the side where we warm up in between orders. I asked my boss if we can use the big fan heaters that use Kerosene to help defrost our trucks. My boss told me that it would be too much money to keep them running all day. This company mind you breaks record every year and makes “fuck you money” Also the icing on the cake is the managers office closed their window because of how cold it is in the warehouse. I never felt so mistreated before.
It seems to be turning into a bit of a hotbed for capitalist apologia, 'bright side' thinking, and gaslighting. People go on the defensive for corporations & employers with some regularity. Which was basically unheard of around here before. Has everyone abruptly gained a newfound affinity for milquetoast neoliberalism? Or maybe it's a concerted effort by libertarian trolls? I'm inclined to believe that some sort of subversion is to blame. Call me a crazy conspiracy theorist if you'd like. Sad thing is, up until recently, this was a pretty decent spot for meaningful, constructive discourse along with a sense of cohesion among like-minded, intelligent individuals. Now I just see a lot of dismissive, mean-spirited mudslinging – if not outright hostility towards anyone who dares to be critical of the status quo.
I’ve worked at the same place for two years on a sales floor selling goods all day to our customers. I do a variety of tasks but spend a bulk of my time interacting with customers and doing transactions. I’m a shift lead so I have to do cash drops and assign other workers to their positions. Recently, a different shift lead was to promoted to Assistant Manager of the store. They were still taking tips so another employee complained to our new HR person. The new HR person responded by taking tips away from all shift leads and the new Assistant Manager. I tried to have them reconsider this by talking with HR and they said anyone who is management or a supervisor can’t legally take tips. When I was promoted to my position I was never told that I would be considered management or that if I took…
