I'll try to keep this short. Worked for a convenience store by my home about a year ago, left because management was horrible but pay was ok. Recently the store sold, and new manager who knew I knew the job asked me to come back. I went through the application process etc and was told id get a call back. A few days later they call and offer me 20hrs a week at 10/HR which is 3.00 less an hour than I was making there before, and so i know the others there still make that. Here's the kicker though, they wanted me to take the 20 hours and cut a guy making more to 20 hours! So he's trying to save that 3 dollars an hour smh. I obviously laughed and told them no way, for 1 not worth my time, who can live off that?! And 2 that…
Christmas gift from management
An opened multi pack pair of Christmas socks (the pack was split between all employees), a candy cane, and a cut up piece of paper that said “merry christmas from “director, floor manager, assistant floor manager” in the same person's handwriting. Meanwhile the company cut are bonuses and critical staffing pay and blacked out time off for the holidays, even though management won't be there. And there was a recent article in the times that the c-suite execs make $11 million annually as a base salary their first year. The value of the gift was $2. I would've rather had the $2. Also…I'm Jewish. But thanks for the Santa socks. I had literally had a conversation that week about being Jewish.
I'm sick of managers being able to get away with so much stuff, simply because they're managers. Don't want to drive your own car into the office? They get a company vehicle that they can take home, and their gas is paid for. Don't feel like going in to the office? They get to work from home. Holidays coming up soon? They get the whole week to spend it with their families. Us lower-level workers do not. Instead they ask one of us employees to be an in-charge for the day, and they do not pay them any more to be the in-charge. Want a vacation? They can just decide to take one, and they don't have to get anybody to approve it. They get better health insurance coverage options than us.
So I’ve been a part of this thread for a while now and learned a lot of great things. Today I put it to use. I’m a cashier. And I’ve not been there for too long. But a coworker (who is pretty rude, and gets complained on OFTEN) approached me and said “we’re all chipping in on a gift for ____. Would you mind participating?” And I immediately said “no. “ and she gave me a look, as if to say “oh come on” and I said “I don’t have the money.” And she kept looking at me. And I said “would you like to see my bank account?” And she said “no that’s fine. You can just pay me back on payday” and I said “no. Don’t worry about it” And afterwards I was pretty pissed off. 1, for being pressured into giving a “gift” that I have no…
Thanks to this sub for disillusioning me to emote bs. So… The week after Thanksgiving, we were all given $50 cash and a hand written note as a “thank you” for our work. We get it every year at around the same time. Something that I never considered until this year, however is what happens next. The 2nd week of December, the “HR” rep comes around and asks for a $50 donation for the company owner to pool together to buy him a xmas gift. It's not mandatory but expected. He gives us $50 to turn around and have HR ask us for the same as a donation for a xmas gift as a thanks to him. Mind you he can afford a 2nd apartment just as a personal gym closer to the office and other exorbitant shit like that. Oh to wrap it all up. The office is closed…
