Way back at the start of this year, I got told on my annual review that, as an 8:30-5 employee, it was “unacceptable” that I was leaving on time every day. I told them that I was happy to stay late if there were specific tasks that needed to be done, but I wasn't just going to stay late for no reason. After that, I started keeping a log of every time I left that was not right at 5, just in case they got on my case again In May, 3-4 employees that live in the same neighborhood (including me) started car pooling together because it's a hour and a half round trip each day. I just got told that the owner of the company has said that the carpool (he isn't even in it) “isn't working” because people are leaving on time and stuff isn't getting done. I…
I am a part time admin asst for a respectable community college. I only get paid once a month. I submitted my timesheet as usual, but there was some snafu in the system. OK shit happens, right? I talked to payroll earlier in the week who said they couldn’t get me paid until the end of the week when they finished. Today they they aren’t finished with the taxes and gave me no estimate when I’ll get my check.
Casually left by management
Back when my Mom worked at walmart as a door greeter, she overheard on the walkie a conversation from her B0ss and his superiors B0ss: We need to open more registers!! we have too many long lines!! Superior: But boss, the Covid restrictions! B0ss: FUCK COVID, IT AIN'T REAL!! OPEN MORE REGISTERS!!! to which they ACTUALLY did! Luckily, my mom doesn't work there anymore! but they still ask her consistantly if she'd come back, but her response is always “Fire B0ss, and I will!” … they can't keep staff for long.
So this post will be somewhat rambling, as my fingers are fueled by adrenaline, but I just have to say absolutely fuck the nonprofit industrial complex (NPIC). I work at a relatively small nonprofit of 20 employees, with 5 being in South Africa. While the nature of our work in reproductive justice has us understandably busy of late with the recent broadside of legislative and judicial attacks on reproductive autonomy, we're completely burnt out: overworked, underpaid, and disrespected. What is sad is that this burnout is not due to the external challenge of beating back the boomers, but instead comes from the grating and undeniable awareness of just how exploitative, hypocritical, and dishonest those who publicly present themselves as being champions of pay equity, fairness, and progressive politics can be. Our Executive Leadership is totally obsessed with getting more and more funding. This would be okay if they were equally…
I recently got a position as a substance abuse counselor for a local mental health facility. They don’t pay great. Before the interview the supervisor does meet & greets with potential employees to talk through the position and see if they’re a good fit. Part of her spiel is that since we’re a nonprofit, we are doing our job because we love our field and not because we want to get paid well. Why on earth can we not have both? Why should I not be able to afford my own place to live and have a job I’m passionate about. It’s hard for me not to interrupt every time I hear her. I feel a lot of pressure because I’m the only counselor hired so far but I also just did an interview for another position with WAY better pay and benefits and I’m hoping I hear back from…
Learned from Antiwork!
I wanted so bad to say the reason why I couldn’t come in, it’s just habit got me. But, I thought back to this sub and kept it short and matter of fact!
