My husband lost his job because his manager did not like him

Hi everyone, need to do a little rant on horrible managers. Me and my husband recently moved countries and started fresh. He applied for roles and things seemed to be going alright as he secured a job quickly. Well, his new manager soon showed how incompetent he was and should never lead or manage people. It first started when after my husband tried to do the job that he thought he had assigned to do and there was a lot of push back from said manager. Like pretty much blocking him and micromanaging everything and not letting him do his job properly. 2 months in and after talking to the CEO multiple times and finally my husband found out that the role he signed up to do isn't actually what they want him to do, but for the whole 2 months nobody had managed to let him know that. Only…

When your employer says “don’t buy your plane tickets” without first asking for the time off. That sucks

My work’s policy is “do not buy your plane tickets before getting your time off approved.. not only is it disrespectful but cannot guarantee it’ll always be approved.” Like… if I have the time off available.. not my fault over the possibility of understaff. Where I work, we are divided into different departments per our job role and there are times when nobody is available in X apartment and the supervisor gotta suck it up. What if COVID or some other cold takes us all out? The times my coworkers in my dept have been out, my supervisor asks what help other coworkers from other units could provide and then in the end it’s like “oh no they’re not trained for that…” when they are a bit trained. Anyways Plane tickets are expensive af if you don’t buy then in advance. Hell, probably buy them couple months in advance if…

Started new job – they’re thinking of reneging a leave request I specifically enquired about before starting and WHEN I started

The leave in question was months away when I was to start this job but as my colleague also has leave on x date early September (mgr didn't realise until just now), I think they're gonna renege (from how they've talked about it). The leave in question is to see family interstate so Idgaf I am not cancelling that. I brought this leaveup in both interviews I had and as well as when I first started this role. I'm still on probation and I am financially secure so if they fuck me with this, I am in half a mind to just quit on the spot. Pay and work conditions are pretty good but there are downsides (overtime is paid in lieu which I loathe, on-call is a week long once or twice a month with no on-call rate unless work is completed. It's also not well defined at all)…

How/can I start a union

I work at a place with only 3 other locations. I was fine working there for months, I’ve never actually worked somewhere with a union before and it’s never bothered me. Until we got a new manager. He’s awful. He asked for details about my personal life. This was because I called out because I had an extremely personal emergency with my friend and called out for two days. He asked me for details about that. Then proceeded to ask me about “if I was looking for a new job. Because someone saw you were. We don’t want people here who don’t want to be here.” Literally trying to interrogate me about my personal business on my day off and trying to pressure me into staying. He’s apparently done this to another coworker of mine (don’t have 100% confirmation on that but I wouldn’t doubt it). I also called out…

What’s your stance on workplace banter?

Asking because I personally enjoy it as long as it’s lighthearted and positive. Today, there was a colleague who posted about her power going out today in the team chat and I overheard someone telling the person next to them that they were over-sharing their life. Later, they proceeded to overshare someone else’s secrets that weren’t theirs to share. I felt disheartened that they were displaying such toxic behaviour, but relieved that they weren’t in my team.

Anyone else willing to live a minimalist lifestyle if it means not spending much of your life working?

If working less meant I'd be unable to afford luxuries, so be it. I'd be more than willing to just rely on the basics, drink only water, eat cheap. Hell, I'd do away with the internet and rely on the library if it came to it. There's a lot in my life I'm willing to do away with if it means working less. Unsure if my mentality is shared.
