Comments are… interesting. I didn’t realize valuing my time as an employee for ALL things work related was unpopular

Observed Holidays

Just curious, does anyone have an employer that's trying to dodge observed Holidays (i.e. Monday the 26th in observance of Christmas, or Monday the 2nd in observance of New Year's)? It just seems too opportunistic that Christmas Eve – Christmas and New Year's Eve – New Year's Day fall both on Friday and Saturday. I would have to imagine that some employers think they can get out of recognition of Holiday time off / Holiday pay. Edit: Both fall on Saturday and Sunday

Last minute “quick discussion” emails from manager with HR included.

I work night shift, 12 hours shifts and never have any direct contact with the department manager as he works dayshift. came into work tonight, read my emails like I usually do and received a last minute email from him titled quick discussion wanting me to come in an hour before my shift starts tomorrow to talk to him with an HR business partner present. I’m about 90 percent sure I’m getting fired for stealing time and not being onsite while on the clock do to the email having a lack of an agenda, HR being present, and technically it will be Friday for me because it is my last day to work this week. I unusually spend a lot of time offsite when I don’t have any work to do (I work for a slow paced pharmaceutical company) because I literally can’t stay here all night and just stare…

What’s a good excuse to quit a semi-serious office job when you just want to travel for months?

I want to quit and do some traveling far away with my savings. I have access to an apartment for free from my uncle on another continent. So I'll just need a few thousand a year in food costs, which I easily have in savings. Obviously, I can't say I'm doing this due to how shallow/judgmental most office environments are. What's a really good excuse to cover for quitting when I don't intend to take another job, and want to use these people as future references for when I need a job again?

What do you do if you still need a bad place’s reference?

I’m really disappointed in the situation I’m in right now. Essentially, I’m working three jobs, often pulling twelve hour days (not as bad as some of you, I know, but still not my favourite thing) and making not nearly as much as I want to be. Tonight, one of my jobs gave me hell over a pretty stupid problem. I declined work after my shift was over, and a couple people overheard, which I guess embarrassed my manager. The task would have only taken a few moments, but it shouldn’t matter. My shift was over. I am quitting regardless, but I’m considering waiting a week so that I can give an excuse as to why I won’t work there anymore other than “this is unlawful and you’re being a dick”. I need the reference, because I’m a teacher and this is a teaching gig. I’d love some help on this…

My friend’s son is working 17 hours Christmas eve and Christmas day, not including 4hr break. Need advice.

So he was put on from 10pm-3am Christmas Eve and then 7am to 9pm Christmas day. When he complained, the boss said “so? You're an atheist.” Apparently he also works 50+hr weeks. He's in school. Not sure what state he's in, but it's in the US.
