I work at a doctor's office that employs 5 people including myself. Every year we all pitch in to get boss a giftcard to go out to a very nice dinner with their spouse who is also a doctor and does very well. Usually about $20-30 per person is expected. I'm fed up with the job, my insufferable multi-millionaire boss, and getting underpaid. I don't want to contribute. How do I refuse without ruffling feathers of other people in the office? I know I'm going to get push back if I say it's not in my budget.
I thought we ended segregation?
I work for a large company. In the general slack channel, they post about things. I've seen they have a African American group, they do events, have a support group, and all that. Today I saw they have an Hispanic one. Same thing. I'm just confused on why we don't have a Caucasian group? Every other race is allowed to have these inclusive groups. I wanna say something as I believe this is racism. Whites don't have the same resources as everyone else. I'm afraid I'll get fired for being racist if I call out that these groups are in fact racist. I just don't understand how a company can have separate events for people of a specific ethnicity.
I work at a fragrance store with only 4 workers total. I am a part time worker but this month my job has me scheduled full time because they didn't hire a seasonal associate. Why would I work full time if I am not receiving the benefits? But I agreed to do it anyways since it is only this month and I could make good commission. I now found out that I have a medical emergency that requires me to get a procedure ASAP. I'm not only physically messed up over this, but it is really affecting my mental health as well. I need to take a week off for it and my manager is trying to make me feel guilty about it and having an attitude and no empathy at all. I'm so tired of retail and these “blackout dates” where you can't call out or request off at…
My fiance lost his job after working for a very weird company for 5 months. He worked for a small firm in an even smaller group. He was tossed into things without much training, but he used his experience to get by. There were no formal SOPs, templates, trainings to even assist in his development. This week, after being told 2 weeks prior he needed to “fix a few things on the reports”, he was fired. I’m shocked. 2 weeks before Christmas they fired him for “not working out” without any formal performance plan or PIP. We worked together in a previous job for 4 years. I know how smart and capable he is which makes this even more shocking. How can I support him and help his confidence? Additionally, how do I tell my own family? If, I need to tell them at all. TL;DR My fiancé lost his…
Hey all, I think I already know the answer to this but wanted to touch base with knowledgeable folks. I work for an operations department that is very understaffed right now and work a normal 9-5. By design there are no shifts or OT. Some of us have same PTO coming but I just caught wind that the powers that be are thinking of communicating to us that we could be called in during our vacations if there are other call outs because we are so short staffed. Anything I should know about this, besides that it sucks? Not looking for advice like “say you're always away”- instead looking if there is legal or some odd thing I can look into to prevent this from being the procedure. TIA!
Fired due to disability at Starbucks
I've been told this week that I'm being fired because I'm not performing “to standard”. I have a declared disability and a weight limit restriction of ten pounds. If you've worked at Starbucks you'd know there is a position called customer support where you basically have to complete tasks in certain time increments like (10 minutes) while also being piled on with tasks by whoever is leading the shift. Due to my accommodation and disability I found myself falling behind as I was limited with what I could carry (one gallon of milk only and needing to do more ice runs as I could not fill the bucket all the way). I also walk a bit slower so having to go around the store takes me more time. I've asked for a time accommodation but was denied. I was told that if I cannot replace another barista and perform the…
Dear capitalism,
Reducing the amount of sick days does not stop us from getting so sick we literally cannot perform our jobs. Please just let our bodies rest and recover without dangling the threat of our livelihoods over our heads. We are humans, not machines. If you want machines, go buy them
So my gf works at a hospital. A few months ago one of her coworkers (let’s say her name is Amy) was pregnant. Late in the pregnancy her lower back started hurting. She had the baby and her back was still hurting and she was having trouble walking. So there was a further investigation on it. Turns out she has cancer in her spine (I’m not sure what type). The hospital told my gf and the rest of her coworkers that instead of doing a Christmas party this year, they would donate that money to Amy so she could afford Christmas gifts. None of the coworkers had a problem with this and I personally thought that was very kind of them. Today my gf texted me and said that Amy old them she doesn’t have the money to afford the Christmas gifts, due to paying for tests and not being…
