Fired, with no reason provided.
I hope I can find help here. I live in Chicago. I was just fired today from a manufacturing plant. It’s a union shop that doesn’t have a union rep on-site. The managers fire anyone at will. Well today I was let go. Under the union contract with this site, entry level employees can be let go at any time during their probation period. This was me. They did not want to provide a reason when my supervisor and manager had me in the room. Can they fire me just cause the contract allows them to? Is there a state law that I can use against them?
For context: i’m still currently on a job hunt that I started early June thinking I was being proactive to have something lined up for my out of state move on Sept. 1st. I have applied to mostly higher ed jobs and quickly learned how slow these processes can be, considering I heard back from no one until mid-late August. Now, I am still in the middle of some interview processes for a few schools. One institution in particular offered me an interview virtually, and a week or so later informed me I was a “finalist” and set up an in-person second interview. Once there, I was told if I were a “final finalist” I would get a third and final interview (this is simply an advising position.. but sure.) They even informed me I was on their last day for second round interviews. It is now going on 3…
There’s a job for a regional transit authority that would be amazing for me because I love transit and educating/advocating for it and it ties into my work experience. But the problem is that the pay is incredibly low. It says there’s a range of pay for the role but that the person hired would definitely start at the lowest end at first and be considered for a pay raise after a certain amount of time. Is it even worth me trying to apply to this job to negotiate?
Forced to attend training without pay
Was not told when I took this job that I would be required to endure unpaid training! This should be illegal!

Seems overkill for 17-19/hr
Everyone has a degree.
So is everyone destined for that amazon or mcdonalds job after they get their masters degree or whatever? Are you guaranteed a minimum wage job if you get a masters in CS or Engineering, is that actually the way it is or is it just hysteria. I just want to know the truth man please…. I dont mean to call any of you hysterical at all thats not my intention but is that NASA job really unachievable? Sorry to bother you guys
Just got fired for taking time off
So I have been working at a company for a year now, when I first started things were great. I got paid minimum wage but I got tips that made up for it. I liked all my coworkers, I was even friends with some. In January things were dead. I was always “on call” and only worked 10 hours a week. I was promised things would pick up and maybe I’d even be promoted. That was not the case. Things were slow for months. They could barely keep anyone around. I only stayed because this is my first job in a field I’ve always dreamed of and I wanted the resume and experience to move up eventually. I asked for a raise when my one year was coming up. I had covered shifts and worked 60 hours when no one would. I had stayed late and missed so many events…
