Is a raise on an annual review of 3% good when you’ve only been there 4 months? I have never had a job that does annual reviews or raises like this so I have no context for if this is good or bad. It puts me at around $18/hr which is $1/hr shy of a living wage in my state. I’m pretty happy with it and I know it doesn’t keep up for inflation being 10.25% but they make up some extra wages in other ways like reimbursement for work uniforms, great benefits, PTO, and travel compensation.
Title is straightforward: I was fired yesterday morning with zero notice and without cause. In the meeting my manager said that it was because of a “shift in demeanour” and that “my heart wasn’t in it” – which is funny because he congratulated me on hitting over 125% of my target this month a few days ago. I was never outwardly expressive about how much I hated my job, but I’m sure I wasn’t the most chipper of the bunch either. What’s interesting is the official termination letter says it’s “not performance related, however the company has decided to go a different direction”. Regardless, they’ve offered me 1 month of base salary and oh-so-graciously the salary and commission I already earned (that I’m legally entitled to). I requested 2 months salary because the job market is not kind to young recent grads. HR told me the job market is “active”…

Excuse note from a Funeral Director
Hopefully this belongs here, if not, I’m sure you’ll let me know. My husband is a funeral director. He came home from work last night after having a service yesterday. In conversation he mentioned that he had a guy ask for a note to excuse him from work. I said that was an absolute shit employer and that shouldn’t be necessary. No one should have to have a note to pay respects.
this is something i’ve faced, am wondering if anyone has any thoughts on how address this sort of thing so we can start overcoming, stop waiting for someone else to come along and save us, and start building a better world for real?
Gave my 2 week notice yesterday
I work in business funding (public sector) and gave my 2 weeks notice to my boss. The pay is good, working is acceptable but my daily commute is 41 miles. And we have no longer work from home-policy. For 3 months I’ve asked for working from home, no avail. Bossman says we need to be present for our clients. Enough is enough. 2 weeks notice came as a surprise for my boss, said he was dissappointed. Well fuck him and his subtle racism. I’m not spending my valuable time traveling to work. 2 hours just to commute is fucked up.
I live in Toronto, literally, 99% of the entry-level job requires 1-2-year experience paying the bare minimum wage ($11.50 USD) while the cost of living is comparable to U.S cities with a $15 minimum wage. I am in university and needed a job to sustain me but couldn't land a job at all after 100s of applications. So I lied, added a bunch of bullshit experience and had 10 resemues with different types of job experience. Got my first job within a week, and ghosted them when the semester started lol. Remember, if employers treat you like disposable trash, treat them the same. Fuck em.
Ill start this by saying im in California as well. I had co-worker who was laid off about 2 years ago and has been collecting unemployment from the event since then. He was and still has remained a good friend to this day. The day he was let go he told me that the owner had laid him off stating that we didnt have work for him. He applied for UI and was granted it. Now however that that has run out when he goes to refile for an extension he gets told by a EDD employee that he was infact now fired for being combative over the mask mandate (he was not), and furthermore because he was fired he will also not get an extension and he will have to pay the money back that he HAD received prior. The coworker was contacted by the unemployment office and made…
Fucked my job off today!
It's been a long time coming due to being fucked over on training but an email about pay was the straw that broke the camel's back this afternoon. Every year beginning in April, the company negotiates pay with the union. This usually takes until August and is backdated back to April. In all fairness my company are so anally retentive I have always been treated with dignity and respect to my face. The only time I have ever seen or even heard of a manager losing their rag at someone was both well deserved and utterly hilarious with all the guys taking the managers side. Anyway. Back to pay negotiations. Got an email from the director today banging on about how the company is so hard up and they can't afford fuck all and theres no money to afford anything resembling a decent pay rise and that we should vote…
