TW: suicide Long time lurker, first time posting, on mobile, etc. I work in a notoriously demanding and high stress industry. I’ve been at this job for about 8 months (after switching from a different notoriously demanding industry), and I’ve already received a promotion of sorts; the kind that comes with more work and more responsibility, but for the same pay. I’ve worked a lot of jobs where I moved up the ladder in less than a year. I perform well under pressure and consistently exceed expectations. Sometimes I even enjoy challenges, but this current situation is fucking in.hu.mane! It’s the same old story of inept and checked-out leadership, colleagues who’re absolutely useless, and being chronically short staffed. Not to mention the lousy af pay or the social-life-killing nights and weekends shift. Things are just as bad at our local competitors, and like I said, it’s an industry known for…
I broke my ankle in September. It is unsafe for me to be at work on crutches so I had to file for LOA from work so I can get 70% pay until I heal. I have no printer, computer, or scanner to do so and it’s a pdf that you have to print, fill out, and fax or email back. I’ve had to get my parents help. Since the beginning- they asked me for a return to work date and I gave them the time the doctor told me was expected to heal. It didn’t heal by then, so I had to go through the process of doing it all again. And it still hasn’t healed so total I’ve done this 3x in 2 and a half months. It just doesn’t make sense to me that while I’m injured I have to keep going through this process. I understand…
I’m an autistic guy. This is my first full time job. Obviously at work they don’t know that I’m autistic. I managed to mask it very well during my interview. But I couldn’t mask it every day.. General manager said that he wouldn’t renew my yearly contract because I’m not communicative enough, don’t talk a lot with my coworkers, didn’t attend one of my coworkers’ wedding, and prefer to eat alone every day. He said “work alone isn’t enough. You have to be optimum.” Mind you, this is a desk job and I don’t interact with customers. In my 3rd world country it is legal to terminate a contract for any reason after the first year. So in April I’ll be jobless again. For being socially awkward.
My old company. No time theft. No washroom breaks. But if your a smoker you can stay out there an extra ten minutes. Take smoke breaks throughout the shift sometimes another half an hour. We care about your health and safety. The skids are higher than safety standard. The stands that let you get to the top their are only three in a workforce of hundreds. Go work in the freezer, we got one moldy jacket thats been there since the store opened. If you got multiple people working in the freezer your fucked. We expect everyone to wear the companies shirts. Each person is given between one – three to cover the week. Apparently you have to wash them through the week or smell like bo. The second richest person in canada can't afford to supply the shirts. Equal rights for all. Bullshit. We care about your health and…
I interviewed for an entry level position for three weeks with 3 different teams and after the last interview, they ghosted me for a week or so before coming back and requesting five references’ emails all by the end of the day last Friday. Mind you, they tell me this Thursday afternoon, as if it isn’t about to be thanksgiving week. I remember when reference requests used to be in the application, but now wasting someone’s time first is a-ok. It’s a weird time to be alive.
For the past three months I've worked at a small product-testing lab that specializes in vitamins and supplements. Client companies send in samples of their products and we verify that they are not full of arsenic, lead, mercury, etc. I started in the 'prep' lab preparing the samples but last month I was moved to their wet chemistry lab where they do a bunch of little side tests I've had to learn. There's also a microbiology department. When I started there were 17 or so employees. Three weeks after I started, the sample load plummeted. Now each day we don't have enough for even 8 hours of work when previously employees worked overtime to get results out on time. Shortly after, the chemistry manager (my boss) was fired. She had been no-call no-showing a lot but when she did show up she was often drunk. After she was gone the…
“An employee died during a shift at an Amazon logistics center in Leipzig (Germany). Cardboard was allegedly placed around his body – other employees continued to work around him. The company subsequently acknowledged mistakes, but did not explain why operations were not completely shut down.”
Companies isn’t all about sales!
I got an email saying our Q4 will be happening next month. I don’t want to go but I have to. The last one was pretty much a circle jerk of sales and upper level people congratulating each other. I work in tech and I love my job. I worked my ass off to get the job and I work my ass off at the job because I love what I do and I want a long career in tech. But it pissed me off to see these people and how they think sales is the back bone of the company. And when they do prize give aways, all those circle jerk people are the only ones in the running for those prizes. News flash! You work in a tech company you can’t sell what you don’t have. So you don’t work if the developers aren’t there to make the…
