What is the price of a worker’s life in 21st century America? Not much, in the eyes of the corporate elite and their political representatives. Global heavy equipment maker Caterpillar, Inc. willfully ignored basic safety measures that could have prevented the death of 39-year-old worker Steven Dierkes in June, according to a report released Wednesday by the US Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). On June 2, Dierkes, who had only started work at the Mapleton, Illinois, foundry nine days earlier, was taking a sample of molten iron from a vat kept at more than 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit when he fell in, instantly incinerating him. Old guy here. My contract ran out and I have been looking for another. I see a job from linked in and apply. One of the questions is what was my GPA from 30 years ago. Admittedly it is not impressive but how about the last 30 years where I have worked successfully in a number of different positions and been promoted. The last 7 years I have worked doing the job you are advertising. SMH
, they said that’s a different story, wtf is wrong with this country. Why Is Covid the only thing that’s reasonable to stay home with without being fired for being sick? An absence is an absence unless it’s covid? Why? I’ll lose my job if I call in, unless I have covid. I hate this.
SaYing “no problem” is oFFensIVE
“Dear Every Cashier in America: the proper response to 'thank you' is 'you're welcome,' not 'no problem.' And you're supposed to thank me” – Tom Nichols I know this is an old tweet. For some reason seeing this today made me flashback to when I cashiered at Knotts Berry Farm and a Boomer yelled at me because I “ruined their visit” by not thanking them for coming there. I’m a “no worries” responder and I remembered telling them to have a great day as I handed their purchase to them but I gasp missed the thanking them part and you’re welcome, resulting in a rant. Just a friendly reminder that minimum wage workers are still people trying to do their jobs.
