I was skipping work for a few days, drinking and whatnot but then had to go to ER for alcohol withdrawals, was sent home with a script to detox so i don’t seize and a doctors note to my work saying i cannot work for a week. My time is up and I know that everyone is going to pester me about why i was hospitalized and gone so long. I obviously don’t want to tell them about my drinking problem. So whats another good believable excuse for my case? I was thinking appendicitis but, I don’t know if that checks out? Anyway i’m a line cook and everyone there is very close. So. theres no escaping being pestered about this. SOS
“Paid” Time Off
Does anyone else’s employer allow you to buy vacation days? Where I work, you can buy extra vacation days (paid time off). You can also sell your vacation days back to the company if you don’t want them. So essentially for buying or selling, the company prorates your daily pay, and adds or deducts that amount to/from your paycheques over the course of the year.
I've taken like 6 different medications for sleep, and my anxiety. nothing works. I can't even sleep with cannabis, although it helps with a lot. I'm trying to get Disability, but even if I do get it, that's not enough to live anywhere. I'm so scared and depressed.
Whether being paid under the established minimum wage, weren't given a paycheck “accidentally” or otherwise, while being a contractor, or even had been otherwise screwed out of payment you were actually entitled to, all as a deliberate act on the part of who is responsible for paying you, how often does it happen? Because often, I think about my future, particularly whether or not I could potentially have my wages withheld from me, for IF I am lucky to get a job. I want to hear personal stories, or incidents that you heard or read about secondhand, because I want to get a wider perception of just how bad the labor market can get.
Fuck Journeys. (A rant)
As of today I’m no longer with that company, therefore I’m not going to hold back at all regarding my experiences there. This might possibly be the worst job I’ve had so far. The reason has nothing to do with the job itself – it was a very straightforward and easy job. You get shoes for people, let them try them on, try to upsell them on socks and shoe care kits, nothing too demanding. Technically we’re supposed to follow some whole big plan (one of the steps is “four on the floor” where you literally have to bring out four boxes of shoes at once for the customer in addition to showing them all kinds of accessories to make them say “no” at least 3 times… not even kidding) but management at my store never cared about enforcing that thankfully. It also has nothing to do with the people…
I’ve been working at a place as a for months now. I’m not disclosing where for obvious reasons but I make around 15 dollars an hour. It’s a small place but according to my manager, it took her a couple of months to find employees ( me and another girl). Despite this, she doesn’t treat us well at all, our hours are horrible and we don’t even have two days in a row off because we aren’t allowed weekends off, and we are overworked and do non stop cleaning, secretarial work, + dealing with customers. It seems like we aren’t appreciated at all for the work we do and how hard we work. We have a deep cleaning list for every week, a list my manager made up on top of the other cleaning list we have to do. The two other employees and my name are on this list,…
Last night I was out outside to work the drive through, in the freezing cold. They gave me a half assed thin jacket to “keep warm” in the freezing temps. Their rule is as long as it’s not 32° or less, they will put us outside. I was kept outside all night because the weather app was at a constant 34°-35°. They have heaters outside that don’t work and they won’t do anything about it.
Just a little background so you guys understand my perspective. I’m Gen-x, which are your current 42-55ish year olds…I graduated from a private university in 1995 at a total cost of $40k…not too bad. I was immediately offered a job at Halliburton (with Dick Cheney as CEO) at 42k per year with guaranteed 6k annual increases basically forever. I did nothing all day as they wanted the young employees to just observe for a few years. We had free gym and cafeteria facilities, day-care…the works. The seduction of the dark-side of the corporate world is strong and I embraced it for a short time…I left after two years out of boredom…keep in mind this is pre-internet, no mobile phone times. I read the newspaper and slept all day. Anyways, I’ve had a good career and I make six figures, but frankly that just covers the bills these days when you…
