I need help understanding labor unions.
A little info about me, I'm fairly new to this subreddit. I have worked two jobs over the course of two years that were both in the customer service industry. (one was a grocery store, the other is a Chick-fil-A) They were fairly decent until I tried asking my bosses to give me raises and advancements because I wanted to grow in the company. Both have given me empty promises that I'd be able to grow and never actually delivered on them. My current job is actually worse than the first because they're giving me less and less hours each week. (coincidentally this is coming after a $1 raise) I've been browsing this sub for a while and have seen people talk about the benefits of labor unions. Can anyone actually explain to me what a labor union is? What do they do? How do you join one? How…

I sure can't wait to go to work and make less than enough money to support myself and live on my own. Feels awesome to work somewhere where they dangle benefits you'll never be able to get because they'll never give you enough hours to get them in your face like it's some sort of highly coveted holy grail that will make your job worth while. Love being told my job is at risk because I'm not doing it fast enough and being expected to pretend like it's not a worthless, soul crushing job that should be completely replaced with robotic labor. Fucking love living in a waking nightmare and needing to pretend to give a fuck because other people don't want to be reminded that this is all futile and nothing good will come of anything. Rev up those anti-depressants cause I sure want to fucking die right now.
why do we glorify over work?
I work at a public school. So many of the people work above and beyond contract hours, spend so much on their classrooms. Given grief for being out sick despite flus, rsv, covid raging through the hallways. No support from administration. Yet no one says anything and kisses up to those in power. Why? Especially during a labor and teacher shortage????
I usually work from 8 am to 5 pm. I would get up at 7 am, get dressed and out the door by 7:30, and then go straight to work. Then when I'm at home around 5:30 pm to 6 pm, I'm too tired to do anything. I eat and try to watch YouTube because I can't do anything requiring brain power like writing or video games or crafts, and then I go to bed by 9 pm (meaning I only have 3 hours for myself in the entire day and can spend all of it grocery shopping, cooking dinner, etc). What I've started doing is setting an alarm for 5:30 am or 6 am where I will have an extra hour to do whatever I want. I can go on Reddit, listen to music, and take a thorough shower. I can get an actual breakfast, and get relax. It's…
