Part time or per diem, which way hurts me less?

I’ve been working as an outpatient and acute care Speech Language Pathologist for 2.5 years (10year career) at a below market rate (40$) for a small community health system. Typically 14-20 hours per week. They were recently bought out by another big hospital system, and they asked me to switch to per diem, at 55$ per hour. I verbally consented and several weeks later my manager asked me to fill out a change request form. On Friday evening my manager texts and says that they were about to change me to per diem but are now willing to extend a prorated PTO for part time and wants to know by Monday morning what my decision is. Why are they pressing me back forth? Is there something I’m missing, and should I ask for a pay rate increase at part time because they extended me the higher per diem rate already?
