Whenever I see these posts front page from people who whine about their food being stolen, couriers asking for a better tip, or even couriers just describing the shit they are presently dealing with to get you your food, I am happy. You SHOULD be made aware and uncomfortable by the fact that you’re using a service that undermines and exploits desperate people.
“This is so unprofessional” fuck you so are the wages these people deal with. Karen.
The people working for these shitty apps are by far some of the most financially desperate. They are often leaning the cost of fixing their own car against the ability to pay rent this month’s rent. And if you can regularly afford to spend $30 for a meal, you are completely disconnected from the reality of the poverty that so many of these people are dealing with. You are contributing to the stratification of lower income people with the middle class.
20% tip doesn’t apply here. That could be a generous tip for a dedicated pizza delivery driver, but you are clueless if you try to apply that to gig deliveries.
Thankfully I don’t work for any of these shitty apps anymore, but it’s insane how many people, from my experience, offer a $2 tip or nothing, for a delivery. You people don’t see your couriers as human. How much would you offer a roommate to go pick up your burrito? That should be your tip at least. Know that Uber and DoorDash takes the majority of the fees you pay to order food. $8 delivery fee, your courtier gets $2.50 before a tip.
You should order takeout and go pick the food up for yourself. But if you do use a delivery app, $10 should be average and $5 should be minimum for your tip.
So yeah. If you get fucked by a food delivery service app, you deserve it because you almost certainly didn’t tip enough.
