Pregnancy discrimination?

I’ve been working at my job in healthcare for about 5 years in which time I had a daughter who is now 2 and a half. Recently my employer started offering short term disability insurance which was being offered as a way of getting paid maternity leave because they offer none. I opted in under the off chance I would get pregnant or need short term disability. A few months later we hired a new employee who told me during training that he was hired because someone was probably going out on maternity leave soon and wouldn’t be coming back. I’m the only person in our department who is within their child bearing years so I figured he would have to be talking about me. I’m wondering if I’m being crazy or if I should talk to HR or a lawyer? Is this illegal?
